EUCHARISTIC ADORATION: There will be Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament in Patrickswell Church on Saturdays from 8am until 12noon, and in Ballybrown on Wednesday from 6 to 8pm.
FIRST HOLY COMMUNION: Congratulations to the twelve pupils from Patrickswell National School who received their First Holy Communion last Saturday. All the school staff are thanked for their work in preparing the children for the ceremony which was held in the Church of The Blessed Virgin. The Ballybrown ceremony will take place on Saturday May 25.
BLOOD DONORS: The Irish Blood Transfusion Service requires three thousand donations every week, and a clinic will be held at the Greenhills Hotel, Ennis Road, on Wednesday May 22 from 5 to 8pm. This session will also facilitate recruitment to the Bone Marrow Registry. You can visit any blood donor clinic as long as ninety days have elapsed since you last gave blood, and you are urged to please give regularly. There will be donor sessions in Doon, Castleconnell and Pallasgreen the following week. For more information contact the Donor Information Line on 1850 731137, or the Blood Transfusion website.
ACTIVE RETIREMENT: The coffee morning and cake sale last Thursday was a great success, which resulted in the amount of €750 being raised for the Alzhiemers Society, and many thanks are due to Christy and John at the Cú Chulainn for hosting us again, and putting up with the invasion. Our penultimate Gardening Class for this term was moved inside at the last moment, and took the form of a powerpoint presentation on the subject of sensory gardens. The postponed Tea Dance will be held this Sunday May 19, in the GAA Hall from 3 to 6pm, with music by T.J.Ryan. Admission is only €6.
SENIORS’ PARTY: Patrickswell Seniors’ Party went ahead last Friday May 10 in the Cứ Chulainn, commencing with mass at 7-30pm, which was celebrated by Fr. Muiris O’Connor PP. Fifty patrons then enjoyed a hot dinner followed by a choice of delicious desserts, consisting of fresh fruit pavlova, homemade fruit tarts, fresh cream trifle and cheesecakes, which had all been generously donated for the occasion. After the usual post dinner conversation over tea and coffee, there followed a night of dancing with music provided by T.J.Ryan. The organisers would like to thank most sincerely everyone who helped in anyway, including all who donated spot prizes, but especially all the new volunteers who came on board so willingly to assist with setting up and serving. Everyone’s efforts were warmly appreciated and are gratefully acknowledged.
AN POST RÁS: The sixty-first An Post Rás takes place across Ireland from this Sunday May 19 to 26, and will pass through Patrickswell on Tuesday May 21 during stage three of eight, from Nenagh to Listowel. Its scheduled time of arrival will be around 12-30pm, which will be 79km into the day’s total distance of 141km, and will feature an An Post, Post Office Sprint, before proceeding on to Adare and Ardagh. Safety of spectators and competitors is paramount, so if you decide to come and view the race, please comply with all requests from the gardai or race marshals. Only after the Broom Wagon has passed through following the last rider and to pick up riders who abandon, will the road be considered clear of race traffic.
COMMUNITY FUND: Spar Ireland has launched a new local community programme called Helping Hand Community Fund in celebration of its 50th year serving local communities. Its aim is to mark and recognize local community groups around the country, and will award one-off donations to support initiatives, projects and not for profit organizations that will directly benefit local communities and will leave a lasting positive legacy. The funding can go towards providing practical support, a helping hand such as equipment and resources for projects that directly benefit for example children, youth, the elderly, community services, arts and culture or the environment. Thirtytwo prizes will be presented to thirtytwo different projects, and applications are welcome from voluntary clubs and organizations including
sports clubs, the arts, social and community services, the environment,
heritage and youth development projects. Closing date for entries is Saturday June 30 at www.spar.ie
OLD FURNITURE WANTED: Old and old fashioned furniture, excluding sofas and mattresses, and old or broken tiles and plates are wanted for a new Newcastle West based furniture up-cycling training course for people who are unemployed. This new training course will restyle old but solid furniture so that it can be re-used and sold on, with money reinvested into the training project for materials. Pick-up of the furniture can be arranged at a cost of €5 per trip required. To arrange a pick up contact Trevor at West Limerick Resources on 069 77752.
TRADITIONAL LIME MORTAR TRAINING: West Limerick Resources will be offering a one week training programme (Monday-Friday, 9.30am-4pm approx) on the use of traditional lime mortar to members of local communities who are interested in undertaking simple conservation and repair work at historic sites, such as graveyards, subject to the necessary permission and guidance of Limerick County Council Archaeologist. This hands-on training initiative is free to those interested in becoming involved in conservation and enhancement work. Limited places are available, and registration essential.
