ROSARY: In honour of the Feast of Our Lady of Fatima, the Rosary will be recited at the shrine this Monday evening, May 13, commencing at 7pm. An open invitation is extended to all to join in and pray for your own intentions and for the needs of the parish.
BLOOD DONORS: The Irish Blood Transfusion Service requires three thousand donations every week, and a clinic will be held at the Kilmurry Lodge Hotel, Castletroy, on Thursday May 16, from 5 to 8pm, to facilitate that ongoing requirement. You can visit any blood donor clinic as long as ninety days have elapsed since you last gave blood, and you are urged to please give regularly. There will be a donor session in Caherdavin the following week, when recruitment to the Bonemarrow Registry will also take place. Please also consider pledging a donation of blood to the ongoing Garda Blood 4 Life Cycle. For more information contact the Donor Information Line on 1850 731137, or the Blood Transfusion website.
TEA DANCE: The postponed Tea Dance will now be held on Sunday May 19, in the GAA Hall from 3 to 6pm.
SENIORS’ PARTY: Patrickswell Seniors’ Party will take place this Friday May 10 in the Cứ Chulainn, commencing with mass at 7-30pm, followed by dinner and dancing. If anyone would be able to assist during the day setting up or serving in the evening, please call in to the Cứ Chulainn from 12-30pm onwards. Contributions of desserts towards the meal and spot prizes for the raffle would also be gratefully received.
GOLF SOCIETY: Our recent outing was held in Rathdowney Golf Club on April 27. The weather was very kind to us with sunshine being the order of the day. We had a very decent turnout of 30 members, and the results were as follows; 1st Paul Darcy with 38points, 2nd John Long 32points, 3 rd Martin Ryan 32points, 4th Gerry Molyneaux 32points, 5 th Timmie Sheehan 31points, 6 th Donal Geoghegan 30points.

TIDY TOWNS: There was a lot of activity on the green opposite Lucey’s last week, with many people under the impression that either the sewerage scheme had got ahead of itself, or that there was an outbreak of vandalism taking place. There was no cause for concern however as Mick O’Dea and Liam O’Carroll were replacing the grey pots which had fallen victim to the winter frosts, and were well past their sell by date. We would like to thank Mick and Liam for coming to our rescue, and for completing the job so quickly and efficiently. The box ball shrubs now have a new home for another few years. We would all like to wish Marie Foley a very happy birthday and hearty congratulations for her 60th birthday next Monday.
ACTIVE RETIREMENT: Our gardening class continued last week with a visit to the garden of one of our members who is not only an enthusiastic gardener, but also a bee keeper, which makes him an horticulturalist and an apiarist as well. This made for a very interesting morning, as we were shown the various types of flowers and shrubs which would attract bees and keep them to a particular location. We were also shown the advantages of having a poly tunnel for the early propogation of plants and seedlings. Our class this week will be a visit to Adare, where there will be a flower arranging demonstration among the morning’s activities. Our last class will be held on Friday May 31 at the Resource House as part of the Positive Ageing Week promotion, when Ailish our tutor will give a hands on demonstration of planting summer baskets and containers, to which all are invited.
CONGRATULATIONS: What seemed like all the parish gathered at the Cứ Chulainn last Saturday night to help local lady Marie Foley celebrate her 60th birthday in style. Many of Marie’s extended family had travelled from across Ireland and the UK to be with her for the special occasion, and joined with all her friends to make it a most happy and joyful celebration. The evening was taken up with some very energetic dancing, friendly conversation and col agus craic, which led to the traditional sing song into the small hours of the morning. Congratulations Marie, and a Very Happy Birthday for Monday.
LOCAL LION: Local sporting enthusiasts were delighted and very proud to hear that scrum-half Conor Murray has been selected for this year’s British and Irish Lions rugby squad. Conor is one of the thirtyseven chosen, and will make his debut during the summer tour of Australia. Well done Conor.
VOLUNTEERING: National Volunteering Week takes place from next Monday May 13 until Friday 19. It offers an opportunity for those not yet involved to try volunteering. Perhaps you have some skill or skills which you can share, maybe you relish a challenge, or have a few hours to spare each week which you could put to better use. Volunteering can make a huge difference to those less fortunate than ourselves, you can make new friends and also have a lot of fun at the same time.
