BOOKING MASSES: Those who wish to book a mass for any particular occasion, can do so by calling to the sacristy before or after any weekday or weekend mass. The diaries for the masses are always kept in the sacristy.
WORLD DAY OF THE SICK: Next Monday, February 11, is the Memorial of Our Lady of Lourdes, and also the World Day of the Sick, which the Catholic Church has celebrated since 1992. Its main objectives are to encourage prayer for those who are sick, to reflect on, and respond to human suffering, and to honour the caregivers who work in healthcare and care for the sick, whether it is at home, in hospital, or any care setting. In his message for the day, the Pope expresses his wish to renew his spiritual closeness to all sick people who are in places of care, or are looked after by their families, and to thank those who care for the sick and elderly. This underlines the church’s fundamental role in “lovingly and generously accepting every human being, especially those who are weak and sick.” The Sacrament of Anointing especially for the sick and elderly will be celebrated in St. Joseph’s Church, O’Connell Avenue, this Friday, February 8 at 7-30pm, with sacred music, prayers and readings. All are welcome.
COFFEE MORNING WITH A DIFFERENCE: In place of our usual April Church Gate Collection, Patrickswell Tidy Towns will be hosting a PANCAKE COFFEE MORNING AND CAKE SALE, next Sunday, February 10th in the Cú Chulainn, commencing at 12-30pm. Contributions of any homemade baking items would be greatly appreciated, and can be left at the Cu beforehand. Alternatively, members will be on hand to accept goods from 11oclock on the morning. Pancakes, which will be made fresh before your very eyes, will also be available for consumption and for sale, and there will be a raffle. There may even be a Pancake Tossing Competition, and a Pancake Race weather permitting. This event is in place of our usual April Church Gate Collection, and we would be grateful for your support. Please come along for the fun, or just a friendly chat and a cuppa.
POWER CUT: The extreme weather conditions of last Wednesday night, caused widespread disruption to power supplies, which included Patrickswell, Crecora, and areas up to and including Charleville. Some areas of Patrickswell only experienced brief outages, while others had to wait until 8-30am the following morning for supplies to be restored. The area around Killonahan was without power from 11-30pm until 9am the following day. ESB crews called to affected households during the following day ensuring that power had been restored.
ACTIVE RETIREMENT: Our January meeting was very well attended, with twentyone members present. Following the usual formalities of minutes and matters arising, various topics were discussed. The group has been allocated another course of gardening classes from the VEC, which will hopefully start in mid-February, with the possibility of a class for another subject if there is sufficient demand. It is also hoped to restart dance and fitness classes on a Monday morning, with student coaches from UL being involved for a seven week period. Members were asked for ideas and preferences for day trips during the year, and as it was the first meeting of the year, subscriptions were also collected, and copies of the constitution distributed to new members. The next meeting, which will be on February 28, will commence at the earlier time of 6-30pm, and will be followed by a presentation on Aloe Vera products.
RURAL BUS: A bus service operates in the area for those who wish to avail of it, conveying passengers to and from the Crescent Shopping Centre on alternate Wednesdays. This service is especially beneficial for those with no transport or who have reduced mobility, as it operates from door to door. The pickups commence from around 10am until 10-45, and the return from the Crescent is at 1-15pm. Whilst this fortnightly service is free for those with the appropriate travel pass, there is an annual charge of 20Euro for insurance purposes. Please consider using this service, as there is a risk of it being withdrawn if there are insufficient numbers using it. FRIDAY CLUB: Members of the Friday Club who meet informally for a chat and a cup of tea every Friday afternoon in the Resource House, will be hosting a series of Lenten Lunches on the Fridays during Lent, commencing on Friday February 15. The lunch will consist simply of soup, which will be homemade, and a roll, and a cup of tea or coffee, and will be available from 1o’clock on each of the Fridays, and is open to all. There will be a modest charge for the lunch, or an opportunity to make a donation to one of the Lenten charities, yet to be decided. The club would welcome your support.
