LENT: Masses on Ash Wednesday were at 9-30am and 7pm, when ashes were distributed, marking the commencement of another Lenten Journey. At the morning mass, Fr. Muiris O’Connor PP, reminded all recipients that the cornerstone of that journey, were fasting, prayer and alms giving. With almsgiving in mind, Trócaire boxes are now available, and this year’s theme is, “Helping communities work their way out of poverty”. Trócaire is celebrating 40 years of working in the developing world. Without the support of the Irish people, this work would not have been possible. India is the focus of attention this year, and the girl on this year’s box is Ambika from the village of Jhilligoan, which is being supported to build a road, a school, and provide clean drinking water, but many other communities like them need your help.
FRIDAY CLUB: As part of your Lenten Observances, you are invited to attend the Lenten Lunches which members of the Friday Club will be hosting, their second of which will commence this Friday in the Resource House from 1pm. The lunch will consist simply of homemade soup and bread, and a cup of tea or coffee. There is no set charge, but there will be an opportunity to make a voluntary donation. Members would be grateful for your support.
EUCHARISTIC ADORATION: There will be Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament in Patrickswell Church on Saturdays from 8am until 12noon, and in Ballybrown on Wednesday from 6 to 8pm.
THE WITNESS: The Witness, a musical by Carol and Jimmy Owens, is the story of Jesus, told and sung by Peter and the other men and women who knew the Master best. Featuring a great cast and coordinated by Fr. Terry Loughran, it will be presented by the Diocese of Limerick, in the Lime Tree Theatre, Mary Immaculate College, on Friday and Saturday, March 8-9 at 8pm. This production which is being staged just before Easter is an ideal opportunity for parishes, youth groups, as well as individuals to participate in a meaningful and relevant way in the Year of Faith and to enter into the spirit of the season of preparation for the events of Holy Week.Young people would particularly enjoy this Musical. BLOOD DONORS: The Irish Blood Transfusion Service requires three thousand donations every week, and clinics will be held at the following locations to facilitate that ongoing requirement: South Court Hotel, Raheen Roundabout, on Monday February 25 from 5 to 8pm. You can visit any blood donor clinic as long as ninety days have elapsed since you last gave blood, and you are urged to please give regularly. There will be donor clinics in Corbally and Castletroy the following week. Formore information contact the Donor Information Line on 1850 731137, or their website.
TIDY TOWNS: The total from our Pancake Coffee Morning is rising, as we continue to receive donations from those who could not attend on the day, for which we are extremely grateful. We have been advised by An Taisce that National Spring Clean Month will again be taking place this year during April. This will be one of the items on the agenda for our next meeting, which will be held next Tuesday, February 26, at 8pm in the Cu Chulainn, and all members, and any new ones who may be interested in joining, are asked to attend.
CREDIT UNION QUIZ: MPCC Credit Union recently staged its local heat of the Credit Union Schools Quiz in Mungret / St. Paul’s GAA Club, where 32 teams and almost 130 primary school children took part. Teams representing St. Paul’s, Crecora, St. Nessan’s, Patrickswell, Ballybrown and Educate Together School in Mungret competed against one another. During the course of the quiz, the children had to answer questions compiled by primary school teachers, which covered general topics such as geography, history, music, literature and sport. The rivalry and competition between the local schools was intense and the atmosphere was electric but after twelve rounds of questions, teams from St. Nessan’s were victorious in both age categories, with the team of Aisling O’Grady, Cathal Condon, Fiona Meehan and Jack Lloyd winning the under-11 section, while the team of Darragh O’Brien, Jordan Hennessy, Karin Mason and Shane Barry won the under-13 section. The winning team members each received a certificate, trophy and a voucher, while their teacher, Valerie Marron, collected the winning plaques for the school.
RAMBLING HOUSE: The very popular Knockfierna Rambling House will hold a special night of storytelling, music, and singing at Kilfinny Community Hall on Friday March 1 at 8pm. There is no admission fee. All are welcome.
WORLD DAYS: This Thursday, February 21, marks the annual celebration of two international observance days. International Mother Language Day is held to promote awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity, and has been observed since 2000. Its objectives are to promote the preservation and protection of all languages used by peoples of the world, as languages are considered to be the most powerful instruments of preserving and developing our heritage. International Tourist Guide Day has been held since1990, aiming to promote the importance of tourist guides. As well as giving help to their local communities, conducting tours for people from all walks of life, tourist guides are also instrumental in promoting local and national tourist activities, which in turns help to sustain local businesses and employment.
