EUCHARISTIC ADORATION: There will be Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament in Patrickswell Church on Saturdays from 8am until 12noon, and in Ballybrown on Wednesday from 6 to 8pm.
EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS: Please note that an amended rota will shortly be issued to replace the one which was recently distributed.
FRIDAY CLUB: You are invited to the Resource House on Friday for the second last Lenten Lunch which members will be hosting from 1-30pm onwards. The lunch will consist simply of homemade soup and bread, and a cup of tea or coffee. There is no set charge, but there will be an opportunity to make a voluntary donation. Members would be grateful for your support, as the proceeds are in aid of a local fund raising initiative.
ACTIVE RETIREMENT: Our VEC gardening class went ahead on Friday morning when our planned visit to another member’s garden took place. The threat of inclement weather did not materialise, and it was all hands on deck to assist with pruning shrubs, cutting back trees, weeding and general tidying up. It was great to be outdoors, and exercising in the fresh air. With an exchange of friendly banter and camaraderie, the job was soon under control, and members retired for tea and delicious home baking, to discuss our activity for next week. Would all members please be aware that the AGM will now take place on Thursday April 4, which is the first Thursday after Easter.
TABLE QUIZ: A reminder that the Community Council’s Table Quiz goes ahead next Friday March 22 in the Cú Chulainn Lounge, Patrickswell, at 8pm sharp. A table of four will cost €20, and a great night’s entertainment is guaranteed with lots of spot prizes. All funds raised will go towards the Development Fund, which is set up for the provision of a community centre for Patrickswell. Your support would be greatly appreciated.
DOG NIGHT: A reminder that the benefit Dog Night in aid of the Brothers of Charity Services, Bawnmore, is taking place at Limerick Greyhound Stadium this Saturday March 16, the night before St. Patrick’s Day. DAFFODIL DAY 2013: This year’s Daffodil Day takes place next Friday, March 22, and coincides with the Irish Cancer Society’s celebration of its 50th anniversary of bringing care and support to the 30,000 people who are diagnosed with cancer each year in Ireland. Silk daffodils and fresh blooms, together with other merchandise, will again be for sale locally, and at numerous locations throughout the city and county. It’s not too late to volunteer your assistance on the day, and more information is available from the society on 1850 60 60 60 or fundraising@irishcancer.ie.
SEWERAGE SCEME: Residents in the Lurriga and Ballybanogue areas are seeking to be inluded in the upgrade to the sewerage scheme which is currently underway, and Patrick C. Fitzgerald has made representations on their behalf for a possible extension. Some fifty or so residences in that vicinity however are deemed to be outside the Core Area, and also outside of the Development Boundary as identified in the Local Area Plan, by virtue of which, the Department of the Environment will not fund an extension to the current scheme. Mr Fitzgerald who for many years has been hosting local news websites online, has posted details of the engineers’ report on the Patrickswell website, which is available at http//patrickswellnewsblogspot
CONSUMER RIGHTS: Consumer Justice Now, is the theme for Consumer Rights Day 2013, which is marked annually on March 15, this Thursday. Among its aims is the promotion and implementation of eight basic rights which include the satisfaction of basic needs, safety, to be informed, to choose, to be heard, redress, consumer education and a healthy environment.
RACIAL DISCRIMINATION: The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination Racism is observed annually on March 21, which is next Thursday. On that day, in 1960, police opened fire and killed 69 people in Sharpeville, South Africa, at a peaceful demonstration against the apartheid pass laws. Then, the United Nations General Assembly called on the international community to redouble its efforts to eliminate all forms of racial discrimination, which continues to cause suffering for millions of people around the world.
GROW IT YOURSELF: The March meeting will be held next Thursday March 21 at 7pm sharp in D&M Garden Centre, Croagh. The topic will be the versatility of cabbages. There will also be our first seed and plant swap, but if you don’t have anything surplus, you can still avail of the seeds and plants available.
CUP CAKE CHAMPION: At a recent International Baking Competition which took place in Manchester, Eileen Jeffers whose mother is Phil Punch, Patrickswell, was afforded the accolade of International Cup Cake Champion, with a stunning creation entitled, “The Road To Mandalay”. The competition was judged by a panel of world renowned bakers and patisserie experts, who described Eileen’s entry as flawless. Phil is justifiably very proud of her daughter’s success.
