THE ADVENT SEASON: Advent is an invitation for all of us to listen afresh to the voice of our Creator God who calls us out of worrying about the past and stressing about the future, God who calls us to live fully in this present Advent time. Advent is an invitation to walk again with Jesus in scripture, symbol and sacrament, Jesus who is present, Jesus who is enough. Walking with Jesus we create the path together.

CAROL SERVICE: A carol Service will take place at St. Joseph’s Church, this coming Monday, December 17 at 7-30pm and all are welcome.

TIDY TOWNS: Much to our relief the extremely inclement weather of the previous few days abated, and the switch on of the Christmas lights at the shrine was able to go ahead as planned last Tuesday. Many children had brought their parents, all wrapped up against the weather of course, most with Santa hats and other seasonal attire, but all with festive cheery smiles anxious to assist Santa with the switch on. His arrival caused the usual mix of fun and excitement, and he was initially overwhelmed with the childrens’ requests for this years’ big day. Many made their own special efforts to sing and dance and impress Santa, which was a good warm up for the countdown. At Santa’s signal there was an enthusiastic response, and a huge cheer filled the evening air as the tree was illuminated. All present were rewarded with the distribution of seasonal treats. Many thanks to all for helping us to create a bit of festive magic.

ACTIVE RETIREMENT: Those who were able to attend the GAA hall last Friday morning were held absolutely spell bound and enthralled by an hour long presentation on the subject of Up Cycling. This is not a new subject by any means, although its name is, and it covers the art of being able to recycle the things that we recycle,  making use of the ordinary everyday things we habitually throw away, and giving it all a new identity to create unusual and imaginative gifts,  Christmas decorations, household items and trendy clothing. This is something that is very much in vogue at the moment, especially and most surprisingly among members of the younger generation, who apparently find it all very cool.

DOG NIGHT: Initial reports indicate that the Community Council was pleased with the response to the Benefit Night which took place at Limerick greyhound track last Friday evening. As well as the proceeds from early ticket sales, there was an enthusiastic response to the raffle, prompted no doubt by the impressive array of spot prizes which were on offer, which had been generously sponsored and donated by supporters. Although there were a few local dogs involved in action on the track, punters were left disappointed with their performance, better luck next time. The Community Council would like to thank everyone who supported this event, the proceeds of which were for the Community Development Fund.

GOAL MILE: A Christmas Day activity with a difference starts at 12 noon from Crecora GAA Pitch. Runners, joggers, walkers, family groups and individuals are most welcome. All donations to Goal can be dropped into the collection buckets on the day. Come out and meet your neighbours and friends, while supporting the Goal organisation, which has volunteers working in many war-torn and famine stricken parts of the world, most recently in Syria. Participants are requested to be parked at Crecora GAA pitch at 11:45.

KNOCKFIERNA: Knockfierna Heritage Society will bring their very popular Rambling House entertainers to The Desmond Complex, Newcastlewest, at the rear of the Library, on Sunday night December 16 at 8pm sharp.  Doors open at 7.30pm.
This special Rambling House session is to mark the first anniversary of the death of the much loved, fondly remembered and one of Ireland’s finest traditional entertainers the late Johnny Donegan.  Johnny was a very popular visitor to the Rambling House, Knockfierna and we fondly remember his singing and playing of those wonderful Irish songs of freedom at our annual Remember Easter 1916 sessions.
Among the large group of entertainers on the night will be Willie Relihan Cork, Ella Marie O’Dwyer Freemount, Tom O’Donoghue, Christy Kelly, Kathleen Herlihy, Jim Lyons plus many more, with apologies to all those not included, but space does not permit. Admission is free as usual, a raffle will take place and tea will be provided.  Our annual Knockfierna wall calendar is with the printers. There are still a few spaces left, if you would like to advertise please contact Pat O’Donovan on 087 9977340
The annual Knockfierna walk takes place on New Year’s Day leaving the Rambling House at 2.30pm sharp.   Much work has been done on the hillside in recent years, roadway has been newly surfaced and in more recent weeks many of the old trackways have been cleared.  Currently we are undertaking putting new walker friendly gates making easier access to the old famine cottage. Lastly we would like to thank everybody who supported us in any way over the years and also those who supported our annual church gate collections.  We would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very happy and peaceful Christmas and a prosperous new year.
