TIDY TOWNS: Our last meeting for this year took place on November 27, which focussed mainly on arrangements for the Christmas lights switch on and our Christmas night out. Before that however, after much discussion, the group decided not to enter the National Tidy Towns competition in 2013, but to focus our efforts on the Limerick in Bloom competition instead. It was also decided that the first meeting for 2013 will be in February, and the AGM in March.

BUSINESS AWARD: Many congratulations to John, Sean and Helen McDermott and their staff at the Gala store, for the their recent silver award in the company’s Best  Competition. The scheme is designed to improve standards and customer service, and assessment takes place throughout the year. Judging is tough and takes into account  many criteria including, staff training, marketing, and legislation issues. Well done to you all.

LAPLAND TO LIMERICK: The ‘Lapland to Limerick’ fundraiser comes to the streets of Limerick this Sunday, December 9, when over sixty cyclists will cover a distance of 1800km on stationary bikes. Whatever the weather, these hardy men and women are intent on completing the final 1800 gruelling kilometres from Lapland to Limerick. All in a good cause, this exciting event aims to raise over €4020 for Down Syndrome Limerick, a euro for every kilometre from Lapland to Limerick. This fundraiser would not happen were if not for the incredible support of the cyclists and volunteers who have been busy organising the event. The event itself has been organised by the HSE Mid West Cycle team in association with Down Syndrome Limerick, Cliona’s Foundation and Cycle for Sick Children. Over the past few weeks a team of cyclists have been busy accumulating the first 2200km. On Sunday December between 11am and 5pm, a group of cyclists representing each of the reindeers and Santa himself of course, will be on Thomas Street in Limerick and cover the final 1800km. So if you’re out Christmas shopping be sure and come by, enjoy some music and offer a show of support to our cyclists. Donations for the event can be made to bucket collectors on the day or on line at www.mycharity.ie/event/lapland_to_limerick

HUMAN RIGHTS: This Friday, December 10 is celebrated annually across the world as Human Rights Day. The first time that human rights were announced to the world was in 1948, and the document  holds the world record as the most translated with more than 360 language versions available. Organizations around the world focus on helping people everywhere to learn about their rights. The following statement was made in 2006. “Today, poverty prevails as the gravest human rights challenge in the world. Combating poverty, deprivation and exclusion is not a matter of charity, and it does not depend on how rich a country is. By tackling poverty as a matter of human rights obligation, the world will have a better chance of abolishing this scourge in our lifetime. Poverty eradication is an achievable goal.” The day also marks the end of the global campaign known as “Sixteen Days of Action Against Violence Against Women”, which had as its theme,”You Don’t Need A Bruise To Be Abused”.

MILFORD LIGHTS: For those who have sponsored lights on the Milford Hospice Memory Tree, the lighting ceremony takes place this Sunday, December 9 at 6pm.
