TIDY TOWNS: The long awaited Tidy Towns Adjudication Report finally arrived this week, and although it won’t be discussed group wise until our next meeting which is next Tuesday September 25, most members are aware of its contents. All the reports and scores are available to download from www.tidytowns.ie for those interested. We did quite well in several of the adjudication categories, and not so well in others. There were encouraging remarks throughout the report, especially as this was our first entry in the national competition, and we were commended on the approaches, landscaping and floral displays in particular, with advice on potential points of improvement. Particular premises and areas were mentioned for various reasons including the Gragon I Chinese Restaurant, very well presented, the Dark Horse is a fine stone building, the modern units look well, the Topaz filling station has an exceptionally clean forecourt with well kept lawns and clean signage, the greenery at Centra is effective, the entrance to the lorry depot is excellent with a nice range of shrubs and trees and the Garda Station is well presented with maturing trees and attractive flowerpots. Belgard Grove is a beautiful collection of well kept homes, presented to a high standard, and the traditional row of cottages are well presented. The beautiful tall trees and old stone walls at Marian Park were also noted. The Cu Chulainn was commended for looking really well, but was criticised for still having Christmas decorations up in June. The range of buildings which include the Post Office are attractive but the gable wall could do with a coat of paint. The biggest black spot for us, and the village of course, is the derelict and now defunct former garda barracks and surrounding land, and “needs attention”. Our biggest pat on the back was reserved for the entrance to Shannon Development, “the new kerbing with its colourful displays of flowers and the nearby roses, is a wonderful enhancement in this location”. Patrickswell really stands out for the quality of the floral displays on the outskirts.
GOLF SOCIETY: Our final outing of the year will be held this Saturday in Salthill Golf Club in Galway. This is the outing where Jim O’Grady will be hosting his President’s Prize. Contact Gerry Molyneaux regarding the timesheet for this competition. We would like to wish Jim the very best of luck on his big day. Belated congratulations must go this week to David Ryan, who is the son of Gerry and Caroline of Ballygeale for his recent double success in Adare Manor Golf Club. He first won the Junior Captain’s Prize, and to crown off his good year a few weeks later he achieved his wonderful double by winning the Junior President’s Prize. Once again congratulations to David on this great double win. Also, we would like to see as many golfers as possible supporting the Golf Classic fund raiser for Patrickswell National School which will take place this Friday September 21 in Adare Manor G.C. Gary Kirby can be contacted for time slots for this outing. The format will be a three ball scramble and the cost per team is 150Euro. Please support this worthy cause.
