WORLD DAYS: This Saturday, September 15, marks the observance of the International Day of Democracy. Instigated by the United Nations in 2008,
the day is meant both as a celebration of democracy and as a reminder that the need to promote and protect democracy is as urgent now as ever. This year's International Day of Democracy coincides with the observance at UN Headquarters of the International Day of Peace, under the theme of “Peace and Democracy: Make Your Voice heard”. Democracy is a universal value based on the freely expressed will of people to determine their own political, economic, social and cultural systems and their full participation in all aspects of their lives.

EUROPEAN MOBILITY WEEK: Towns and counties across Ireland will join almost 2000 towns across the EU to promote European Mobility Week, which starts this Sunday, September16 and continues until September 22. A variety of events will be hosted in Limerick including a car free day, and walking to school. Limerick Local Heroes have organised two “Bridges of Limerick Walks”, one of 3K and one of 8k, both family orientated, which will take place on Sunday 16th September at 11am, in aid of the Mid-Western Cancer Unit in Limerick’s Regional Hospital. This is the first event in the city organised in conjunction with European Mobility Week in Limerick. The theme for this year is, “Moving In The Right Direction”, and the aim is to encourage local authorities to promote alternatives to the car and highlight the benefits on public health and the environment. The week culminates in a Car Free Day, officially designated as September 22, when participating towns and cities set aside areas solely for pedestrians, cyclists and public transport.
