BLOOD DONORS: The Irish Blood Transfusion Service especially requires O+, O- A+ & A- donations this week and a donor clinic will be held at the Greenhills Hotel, Ennis Road, next Tuesday, September 4 from 5 to 8pm. Please note the new time, it is not from 6 to 9pm as was the previous time slot. You can visit any blood donor clinic as long as ninety days have elapsed since you last gave blood, and you are urged to please give regularly. GOLF SOCIETY: We held the first of our two majors in the form of Ger Considine’s Captain’s Prize in Castlemartyr Golf Club in Co.Cork recently. We had a great turnout of members with 44 golfers treading the fairways. The course was playing long but was in great condition despite all the rain of the previous week. This was our first trip to the County Cork course, and a very enjoyable day was had by all as is the norm on all our Captains’ days. The results were as follows. 1st Timmie Sheehan, 2nd Gerry Murray, 3rd Ger Considine, Gross Frankie Nolan, 5th Paul Darcy.
The Golfer of the Year competition is hotting up, with only five points separating the top four. This competition will be decided at our last outing in Salthill Golf Club on September 21. This outing will be our second major, with Jim O’Grady holding his President’s Prize on the day.
RESOURCE CENTRE: September sees the commencement of regular activities at the Resource Centre after the summer recess. County Limerick VEC Community Education is providing a 12 week FETAC Level 3 computer course on Tuesday mornings from 9.30am -12.30pm beginning on Tuesday September 4th. Patrickswell Parent and Toddler Group restarts on Thursday September 13th at 9.30am, and every following Thursday morning from 9.30am - 11.00am. DUBLIN HORSE SHOW: There were notable and praiseworthy performances by two local riders at the recent Dublin Horse Show. Bryan Fitzgerald riding Future Memories was the only competitor from Munster to qualify in the showjumping section for 138cm ponies, and in the Junior Side Saddle class for the Hanson Perpetual Challenge Trophy, Vicky Ryan, Killanahan, was placed second from an entry of ten, riding Thorndale Mischief.
MILFORD HARVEST FAIR: The annual Harvest Fair in aid of Milford Hospice takes place this Sunday, September 2, commencing at 1-30pm, at the Unigolf facility in Castletroy. The long running fair, this year’s is the twentyseventh, is an important part of the centre’s fund raising, and your support is very much appreciated. The organisers are appealing for donations of goods for the various stalls including clothes, books, shoes, produce, bottles, toys, fancy goods and new or unused gifts for the ever popular Wheel of Fortune. Munster’s largest vintage car rally will also be staged alongside the stalls and other attractions. Bernadette Behan of Tervoe, Clarina,
is appealing to all you wonderful cooks and bakers out there for donations of cakes, bread, and buns for the cake stall. If any one wishes to donate any items of home baking, you can bring them to the Credit Union Office at Ballybrown National School, Clarina, on Saturday between 11am and 4pm, our you can ring 087-8162774 for collection. Goods can also be brought directly to the Harvest Fair before 12noon on Sunday.
LIMERICK GATHERING: This is an invitation for everybody, to attend an open community meeting at the Woodlands House Hotel, Adare, next Tuesday, September 4 at 7pm, to share and discuss ideas for “The Gathering”, which is taking place country wide next year, when the people of Ireland will open their arms to family, friends and connections from around the world. They will be invited to come home and join a celebration of everything great our country has to offer. The Gathering Ireland 2013 is a people’s project. It’s about you, your family, your neighbours, your community, your sports club, your town and county. ADAPT SERVICES: ADAPT Domestic Abuse Services is asking women to support Limerick women by taking part in the Limerick Women’s Mini-marathon in October to raise much needed funds for this local charity. ADAPT House in Rosbrien, provides safe refuge to women and their children 24 hours per day, 365 days a year. The refuge has 14 self-contained apartments. Other services include a 24 hour Freephone helpline 1 800 200 504; one-to-one support for women in their local area and regular Outreach Services in Kilmallock, Newcastle West and Limerick; Court Accompaniment; Advocacy; Child and Youth Services.
CHARITY CYCLE: The fifth annual charity cycle for the Cliona Ring Foundation, will take place at Lough Gur, on Saturday September 8, with guest cyclist and champion jockey, Davey Russell. The cycle starts at 10am from the Honeyfitz theatre, and registeration is from 8-30am unti 9-45am. There will be three routes, 70km, 40km and a family route of 8km. Food and refreshments provided.
