TIDY TOWNS: The words of Robert Burns sprang to mind last week, “the best laid plans of mice and men often go awry”, when we were advised that the judging for the Limerick in Bloom competition will not now take place until the second week of August. Hopefully the hanging baskets and containers will have had time to develop and look in better shape by then. The warm and dry spell prior to last weekend, gave us an ideal opportunity to do some more tidying up, and as well as the silage convoys flying with the improvement in the weather, on Tuesday of last week we also had a lawnmower convoy heading up Main Street, probably the first time ever that phenomenon has ever been seen in these parts. After mowing at the roundabout, Jimmy Mulqueen, Liam Foley and Mike Moore headed up to the top end to assist Mossie Carmody, and passing motorists would have been forgiven for thinking that a convention for lawnmower men and their machines was taking place. A major water leak adjacent to the wall at the roundabout was recently repaired, which has given us an opportunity to remove dead trees, briars and rubbish in the vicinity, to the betterment of that area in general.
GOLF SOCIETY: It has been a very successful few weeks for Patrickswell golfers with the three last major cup competitions that were held in Adare Manor golf club coming to Patrickswell. First up to win was Brian Murray who won the Abbey Challenge cup with a great score of seven under par Nett. Brian went around on Level Par 69. Next up was Pa Carey who won the Junior Scratch Cup with a fine score of one over Par 70 to take first place. Gerry Molyneaux won the Nett prize in the same competition with a score of 64 Nett. On the same day Damien Gillane won the Intermediate Scratch cup with a score of 73 Gross. Well done to one and all.
Congratulations also this week to Terence Murray who as Captain of Adare Manor golf club, held his Captain’s Prize last weekend. It was a very successful weekend for Terence and his committee. This honour was well deserved for Terence.
Our next outing of the year takes place next weekend in Adare Manor golf club.
FESTIVAL OF LUGHNASA: Garland Sunday and Domhnach Chrom Dubh are two of the many names of the festival celebrated at the end of July or the beginning of August. It marked the end of summer and the beginning of the harvest season, and on that day the first meal of the year’s new food crop was eaten. In parts of Ireland the nearest Sunday to Lughnasa was known as Cally Sunday. It was the traditional day to lift the first new potatoes. The man of the house would dig the first stalk while the woman of the house would don a new white apron and cook them, covering the kitchen floor with green rushes in their honour. The family would give thanks that the 'Hungry Month' of July was over and the harvest had begun. Knockfierna Heritage Society will celebrate the ancient Festival of Lughnasa this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, July 28 and 29, with a walk at 7pm to the ancient hilltop of Knockfierna, the site of the Festival of Lughnasa for many centuries. This will be followed by an evening of traditional music, songs and stories at the Rambling House, which dates back prior to famine times.
