TIDY TOWNS: The warm weather at the end of last week, coupled with lots of TLC, feeding and deadheading, has certainly made a difference to the display on the wall at the roundabout, and the hanging baskets are now beginning to show some volume, growth and colour. In between the showers, the mowing posse is keeping the grass cutting under control. The shrine is polished and trimmed, the lawn edges have been manicured, the steps weeded, and it is looking immaculate thanks to John and Eileen O’Shea, and John Enright. We acquired a load of compost last week also, thanks to Christy O’Reilly and Mossie Carmody, and were able to finish off the job adjacent to the wall where the watermain was recently repaired. The area at the entrance to the Lis Ard has also been finished off with the addition of a few perennial shrubs. A photographer was spotted in the village last Friday morning, and later that same day, also in a neighbouring parish. This was probably part of the adjudicating process for one of the competitions. Des Fitz continues to weave his magic with the strimmer wherever necessary, and we also continue to be vigilant regarding the absence of litter.
GOLF SOCIETY: These are the results of our recent outing, which took place at Adare Manor last Saturday; 1st Eddie Kiely (Snr.) 43points, 2nd Damien Gillane 40points, 3rd Frankie Nolan 38points, 4th Dean Gillane 38points (b9), 5th Padraig Mann 38points, 6th Brian Geoghegan 37points. Front 9 Gary Kirby, Back 9 Timmie Sheehan. We have two outings remaining for the year, and these are in the form of our two majors. First up is Ger Considine’s Captain’s Prize, which will be held in Castlemartyr Golf Club in Co.Cork on Saturday August 18, and Jim O’Grady’s President’s Prize which will take place in Salthill Golf Club on Saturday September 22. IS YOUR COMMUNITY READY FOR THE SWITCH TO DIGITAL: Those who receive their television signal from an aerial must take action before October 24 2012 or risk their screen going blank when Ireland makes the switch to digital television. The Community Outreach Digital Switchover Programme is now operating across the county and aims to ensure that everyone is prepared for the switch and is specifically targeting older people living alone, those with literacy and other learning difficulties and those with few social networks. The initiative is heavily reliant on the Irish tradition of caring for our neighbours and we are asking communities to look around and help identify those locally who will need a little assistance and make sure that they get it.
