TIDY TOWNS: We were delighted with the heart warming and awe inspiring response to our request for assistance in tackling the wild and overgrown area of Marian Park last Tuesday. Upwards of twenty eager and ablebodied residents braved the frequent showers, and armed with a terrifying array of tools and implements, set about the job in hand with great enthusiasm. By nine o’clock, the area had taken on a whole new appearance. Everyone involved enjoyed great craic, the community spirit was evident throughout the operation, and everyone agreed that it was worth getting their hands dirty for a few hours. The exercise was beneficial too. Thanks to everyone for their efforts, not forgetting Willie Murray and Christy Riley, who had the unenviable task of loading and carting away all the rubbish, which had accumulated over the years, and for finishing off the job so well. The next stage will be to re-seed the area, and to discuss ideas for a permanent planting scheme. It is hoped that everyone will respect the effort that has gone into the clean up, and that there will be no further indiscriminate dumping of household waste and garden rubbish.

LUCKY GREYHOUND: It was a case of first time lucky for Seamus Reardon and John Hogan, joint owners of Minglers Trickie, which won its first race at Limerick Greyhound Track recently. Local greyhound enthusiast Peter Mangan, the dog’s triumphant trainer, was positively beaming when he reported that the dog had won from trap to the line.
