TIDY TOWNS: It was a busy week for all in preparation for the judging of the Limerick in Bloom Competition, which was due to go ahead either on Friday last, or Monday and Tuesday of this week. Hanging baskets were dead headed and turned, litter was targeted, beds weeded, and pavements and kerbs swept. On Monday of last week, the triangle of grass nearest the church, among others, was edged, much to the delight of Fr. Collins, who when passing on his afternoon perambulations, commented that it was very encouraging to see grown men on their knees at that hour of the day. John Leddin also contributed to tidying up the church approach, by removing the wire fencing at the edge of his plot, and replacing it with a fine timber railing. At the other end of the village, Tom Murphy was also generously giving of his time, by cleaning off the wall at the shrine, both inside and out. John O’Shea has been busy keeping the grass at the shrine in good order, and trimming around the pots. Well done to Josephine Kilcoyne for her superb floral display at the Dark Horse, and also the staff at the Resource Centre for their very colourful array of hanging baskets and window boxes. Whatever the results of the competition, which won’t be known until later in the year, everyone’s efforts are greatly appreciated.
ST. PAT’S REUNION: St.Patrick’s soccer club Patrickswell recently celebrated its fortieth birthday with a very enjoyable reunion of members both past and present in the Cu Chulainn Bar. Special guests on the night were some of the founding members namely Mick Bourke, Tom Murphy, Val Gillane, Gerry Darcy, James Shinnors, and representing her father Larry McGuire was Patrica Barry. These people along with several more who came along in subsequent years kept soccer alive through thick and thin, sometimes under some very severe constraints put in front of them. Both old stories and new were shared on the night. A special presentation was made to the founder members on the night. Music was supplied by our new local sensational band, Bad Penny, featuring Paul Carroll, Charles Daly and John Carroll. A very successful raffle was held on the night, the proceeds of which will go to the under age section of the club and also towards the Old Folks Party which will be held later on in the year. Many thanks to all the ticket sellers. A special word of thanks to all our sponsors for the celebration evening. The organising committee of Joe Lynch, Liam O’Carroll and Kieran Darcy would like to thank all who helped to make the night a very enjoyable one. Here’s to the next forty years.
