TIDY TOWNS: The troops were out at cockcrow on Monday morning of last week, picking litter prior to the arrival of the Limerick in Bloom judges, had they been already or had they not? Who knows, but we were ready for them. We use the word troops, because as every one knows, the war against litter is never won. It is an ongoing battle, not just for us in Patrickswell, but in every parish, village, town and city in Ireland. It would be a travesty, for any organisation, no matter how big or small, after investing so much time, effort, and hard fought for financial resources, if any competition was won or lost on the appearance of a carelessly or deliberately disgarded cigarette packet, sweet wrapper or takeaway container, no matter who was responsible for it. We covered the area from the Limerick side of the roundabout from Mrs O’Brien’s house, up to the bridge on the Croom Road, ensuring that even the approaches to the village would present a cared for appearance to the judges. Considering that a clean up had taken place the previous Friday, the amount of litter gathered from just these few areas in the course of a few hours, could only lead to the conclusion, that the passing motorist has a lot to answer for.
The recently sown grass adjacent to the new tiered bed and wall has established itself well, is a fine shade of green and has had its first trim. The wet weather of late has reduced the labour of the watering crews, but thankfully the hanging baskets survived the windy conditions of last weekend.

GOLF SOCIETY: The office of Vice Captaincy seems to be sitting well on the shoulders of Ger Considine as he took on all comers to win our July outing, which was held last Saturday at Woodstock Golf Club in Ennis. This course was a fine test of golf with a swirling wind and some tough pin positions being the order of the day. The weather was very kind to us with a mild day and just a few squally showers. All the long days and nights of hard practice have finally paid off for Ger, as this is his first win of his society golfing career. The results were as follows, 1st Ger Considine  39points, 2nd Liam Quinlan 36points, 3rd Brian Geoghan 34points, 4th Natal O’Grady 34points, 5th Gerry Mc.Dermott 34points, 6th Seamus Enright 33points.
Front 9 Keith Murray, Back 9 Donal Geoghan. The next outing will be the first of our two majors with our President’s Prize being held in Galway Bay Golf Club on Saturday August 20, with tee off times from 10-30am until 12noon. Our President Benny Nolan is looking forward to seeing you all there. Patrickswell golfers are keeping up the good form of late on the club competition scene with Mike Fitzgerald winning the Abbey Challenge trophy in Adare Manor Golf Club with a fine score of 61 net. Ian Kelleher was second with a score of 63 net.

FINE GAEL: Apologies for the omission of this item in last week’s edition, which for some reason found its way into the Crecora notes. The local Fine Gael Organisation would like to thank all those who contributed to their Annual Church Gate Collection, on the weekend of July 9-10. Your support is very much appreciated.
