FASHION SHOW
Fresh, invigorated and recovering from her recent star studded 60th birthday celebrations, none other than Limerick’s very own style and fashion icon Celia Holman Lee will be at the forefront of the Christmas Fashion Show which is being staged at the Cu Chulainn this Friday December 10. The event which is being hosted by Catherine and Christy Murphy supported by staff and friends at the Cu Chulainn, is a fund raiser for the Breast Care Unit at the Mid-West Regional Hospital. As well as models from Celia’s own agency, special guests, super models Sheila Fitzpatrick and Madonna Lucia will also be adding their very own touch to proceedings. Several local celebrities and sporting personalities have responded to a gentle arm twisting and will also be making their contribution to the event. Hairstyling is being provided by Fiona, Tara and Mairead, the team from Klassy Cuts, and make up is also  being provided locally  by Vanity Within.  The evening is scheduled to commence at 8pm and with tickets priced at only 10Euro it will be standing room only for a sensational and fun filled extravaganza. Tickets are available through the week from Catherine, Olive and Louise, or Christy, Tom and John at the Cu Chulainn, and can also be purchased at the door on the night. This will be one Christmas celebration not to be missed.

CHRISTMAS FAIR

This Friday December 10 the Friday Club will be holding their Christmas Fair from 12 noon until 4pm at the Resource Centre. A range of high quality hand crafted goods will be on sale, together with their reknowned home baking and  home made preserves. Refreshments will be served, and there will also be a raffle. Please come along and support the club in its fund raising, even if only for a cuppa and a festive chat, you will be made most welcome.

WINTER HELPLINE

While we are still in the clutches of  severe winter conditions, a helpline service is being offered to the older citizens of our community who may be housebound or isolated and experiencing difficulties because of the weather. The service is being jointly provided by Age Action, St.Vincent de Paul and Muinter na Tire, who can provide vital supplies of food, fuel and medicines. The contact numbers are 01- 4756989, 086-6000751 and 01-8386990. Keep these numbers handy incase there is a repeat of  the current cold snap. It is also a timely reminder to check on neighbours who are elderly, sick or housebound, or isolated and lonely, and who may be in need of assistance, or just reassurance that they can contact someone if the need arises. Bogus callers, are still targeting the more vulnerable in the community, mostly the elderly, with the sole intention of robbing them of their money and valuables. The warning is not to let anyone in to the house or allow any work to be carried out if these people call to the door. Contact  a friend, neighbour, family member or the gardai  to check them out first.

CONGRATULATIONS.
The Green and White magazine has once again picked up the award for the Best Publication at the Cumann na mBunscoil awards, which were presented at a recent ceremony at Croke Park. Ciaran Crowe is joint editor, and congratulations to him and his colleague for their continued success.

 MILFORD LIGHTS

The annual Light up a Memory ceremony takes place at Milford  Hospice this Sunday, December 12 at 6pm. The fund raising team invites everyone to attend for carol singing prior to the illumination of the tree, which will be followed by refreshments. Lights can be sponsored for E5 each, and the tree will remain illuminated throughout the festive season until January 9 when a mass will be celebrated at 6pm as the lights are switched off. There is still time to sponsor lights. Contact Milford at 485859 or 485860 to place an order. Lights can also be sponsored on the night prior to the switch on.

HUMAN RIGHTS

This Friday, December 10 is celebrated annually across the world as Human Rights Day. The date was chosen to honour the adoption and proclamation by the United Nations in December 1948, of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which was the first time that human rights were announced to the world. As this document  holds the world record as the most translated document with more than 360 language versions available, organizations around the world focus on helping people everywhere to learn about their rights. In 2006 the UN Commissioner for Human Rights made the following statement, “Today, poverty prevails as the gravest human rights challenge in the world. Combating poverty, deprivation and exclusion is not a matter of charity, and it does not depend on how rich a country is. By tackling poverty as a matter of human rights obligation, the world will have a better chance of abolishing this scourge in our lifetime. Poverty eradication is an achievable goal.” Has anything been achieved since then?
