CANDLE CEREMONY

A large congregation was in attendance for the 7pm mass on the Feast of All Saints to witness the lighting of the candles by family members of those from the parish who had died during the year. The candles were also lit for the mass on the Feast of All Souls. During the mass Sr. Bridget Finucane from Milford Hospice spoke about the different kinds of loss and bereavement, and how it affects us all in different ways.
She also announced that in the Patrickswell – Ballybrown parish we can now call on the services of the recently formed Bereavement Support Group which offers a caring, supportive, confidential and non judgemental presence for those experiencing grief and loss. If anyone would like a member of the group to call to their home and provide relevant information and support please contact the group by leaving your name and telephone number in the box provided at either church, or through Fr. Muiris O’Connor on 353711 or 086-6075628.

TIDY TOWNS

We were again disappointed and somewhat annoyed to discover that lorries continue to be parked on the grass verges adjacent to the newly refurbished wall just up from the entrance to Shannon Development. One morning in the past week, around 8-45, three horsebox lorries were in the vicinity and manoeuvering to unload whatever they were carrying. The consequence is that the verge, which was only reseeded this year, now resembles a ploughed field, and will have to be rectified at the start of next year. If  the perpetrators are local and read this article we would be grateful if they would refrain from causing damage and park on the hard standing. If anyone knows who might be responsible maybe they could have a word in the appropriate ears. Not too much to ask surely?

DIABETES
This Sunday is designated as World Diabetes Day, and has been held on November 14 since 1991, when it was introduced by the International Diabetes Federation and the World Health Organisation. The day marks the diabetes world’s awareness campaign and has “Diabetes Education and Prevention” as its theme until 2013. Although the campaign continues all year, the day itself is the birth date of Frederick Banting who was instrumental in discovering insulin in 1922. The World Diabetes Day logo is the blue circle which was adopted in 2007. For more information log  on to www.worlddiabetesday.org, www.diabetesireland.ie, or contact the Diabetes Federation of Ireland helpline on 1850 909 909.

BLOOD DONORS

The Irish Blood Transfusion Service will be holding donor clinics at the following locations in the coming week; Ceol Corbrai Hall, Glin on Tuesday November 16  from 6 to 9pm, and the Southcourt Hotel, Raheen Roundabout on Wednesday November 17 from 5 to 8pm. There will be clinics in Newcastlewest and Castletroy next week. You can visit any blood donor clinic as long as ninety days have elapsed since you last gave blood, and you are urged to please give regularly. For more information contact the Donor Information Line on 1850 731137, or www.ibts.ie

DUMP UNUSED MEDICINES PROPERLY
The free collection service for the safe disposal of all out of date medicines is still available in local pharmacies up until Monday November 29. All products, whether over the counter remedies or prescription drugs, can be returned. This will reduce the risk of accidental poisoning in the home especially among small children, overdosing, or inappropriate sharing of medicines. The scheme will also reduce the potential of environmental damage if they are not disposed of properly.

BOGUS CALLERS WARNING

Bogus callers using the disguise of council officials, traders or workmen looking for jobs, and with forged identification or none, are still targeting the more vulnerable in the community, mostly the elderly, with the sole intention of robbing them of their money and valuables. The warning is not to let anyone in to the house or allow any work to be carried out if these people call to the door. Contact  a friend, neighbour, family member or the gardai  to check them out first. Men, women and children are all involved in these unscrupulous activities. Now that the shorter days and longer, darker evenings are with us once more it is also a timely reminder to heed the call to check on neighbours who are elderly, sick or housebound, or isolated and lonely, and who may be in need of assistance, or just reassurance that they can contact someone if the need arises.

LITTER

The County Council is again reminding the public of the requirement of a responsible attitude towards litter and its disposal. Litter is classed as any substance or object  being dropped, dumped or discarded  becoming unsightly and which is visible from a public place. The Litter Pollution Acts gives all local authorities the responsibility to prevent and control litter. Breaches of any of the regulations can result in a fine of E150 up to E3000 if legal proceedings are taken against offenders. The council has a Litter Management Plan, and also a FreePhone Litter Line 1 800 201 151 for the reporting of litter and illegal dumping, which it encourages people to use.

LOTTERY SCAM
Letters informing recipients that they have won huge sums of money in various lotteries are being circulated by fraudsters intent on gaining access to individual bank account details, and should be totally disregarded. The Spanish Lottery and also Euro Millions are just two examples being used. The warning is not to disclose any details to any unsolicited source. Remember, if you are not in it, then surely you cannot win it, as you need to have purchased a ticket in the first place.
