SENIORS PARTY

Almost eighty senior citizens attended the annual party last Friday. Mass was celebrated at 7pm by Fr.Muiris O’Connor, and all guests were then served a hot turkey and ham dinner which was well received. There followed a fine selection of desserts which had all been generously provided locally. The remainder of the evening was taken up reminiscing and dancing to T.J.Ryan. Entertainment was provided in the form of a recitation by Mike Shinnors and Mary Shinnors’ Set Dancers. All guests departed with a spot prize which again had all been generously donated locally. Many thanks to everyone who helped to make the event so enjoyable.

CREDIT UNION

Young local artists up to 18 years of age are being invited to submit entries for this year’s Credit Union National Poster Competition, which has been launched by MPCC Credit Union. The Credit Union Poster Competition is one of the most successful annual promotions undertaken by the credit union movement and the 2010 competition aims to continue this winning formula. Now in its 27th year, the competition attracts up to 50,000 entries through 300 credit unions nationwide and caters for all ages, with categories ranging from under 7 to over 18 years of age. There is also a Special Category for those with physical or intellectual disabilities.

Quite apart from raising and maintaining awareness of credit unions at a local, regional and national level – and involving members and potential members – the competition is about encouraging and rewarding self expression, creativity and imagination among young artists throughout Ireland. The Theme of this year’s Competition is ‘Local. Trusted. Serving you.’ Entry forms have been distributed to local primary schools in the area and children are reminded that the closing date is Friday, November 5. If you have not received an entry form yet, please contact your school or call into one of the MPCC Credit Union offices. Good luck to all the children who enter the competition.

TIDY TOWNS

Our annual fund raising Table Quiz takes place next Friday October 29 in the Cu Chulainn commencing at 9pm. We have again pegged the entry fee at twenty euro for a table of four, with some great prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3 rd tables, together with a host of generously sponsored spot prizes. Your support would be greatly appreciated and with P.J.O’Grady as the unflappable and most capable Master of Ceremonies we are sure it will be the usual interesting and enjoyable combination of mayhem and entertainment. We look forward to seeing you all there. Although its approaching the end of October with many floral displays and hanging baskets long confined to the compost heap the flowers on the roundabout are still providing a colorful late autumnal welcome to the village as is the display at the Resource Centre. The window boxes at the Cu Chulainn also remain a joy to behold, and congratulations to Christy for his endeavours, is it something in his water? Whatever, it’s lovely to see so much colour around so late into the year for however more it may last.

BLOOD DONORS

The Irish Blood Transfusion Service requires additional donations of the O Negative Blood Group this week, and a donor clinic is being held at the Dunraven Arms Hotel, Adare on Tuesday October 26 from 6 to 9pm.You can visit any blood donor clinic as long as ninety days have elapsed since you last gave blood, and you are urged to please give regularly. UNITED NATIONS

In 1947, the United Nations General Assembly declared October 24 which is this Sunday, as the anniversary of the Charter of the United Nations. The day is designed to make known to the peoples of the world the aims and achievements of the United Nations and to gaining their support for its work. Twenty five years later in 1972, the United Nations General Assembly also decided to institute the same day as World Development Information Day, with the object of drawing the attention of world public opinion each year to development problems and the necessity of strengthening international co-operation to solve them.

DUMP UNUSED MEDICINES PROPERLY

From now until November 29, a free collection service for the safe disposal of all out of date medicines is available in local pharmacies. All products, whether over the counter remedies or prescription drugs, can be returned. This will reduce the risk of accidental poisoning in the home especially among small children, overdosing, or inappropriate sharing of medicines. The scheme will also reduce the potential of environmental damage if they are not disposed of properly.
