MISSION WEEK

Thanks are due to the multitude of parishioners who contributed in any and every way to the overwhelming success of Mission Week which came to a close with the 7pm Mass on Saturday. There is a general air of agreement that it was a wonderful week of  prayer and celebration of  faith conducted in such a down to earth way, by Frs. John Hanna, and Tadhg Herbert, yet still very sincere and uplifting. They in return are grateful for the collection of 1120 Euro for their school and mission in Haiti which was destroyed in the recent earthquake with the loss of three hundred lives including many children. Frs, John and Tadhg are wished well for their  future missions around the country.

RURAL WOMEN

This Friday October 15 is the celebration of International Day of Rural Women, a group who make up one quarter of the total world population. The United Nations declared the day in honour of the role that women play in their communities, in enhancing agricultural and rural development, and improving food security. The day was first celebrated in 2008, and comes on the eve of World Food Day.

WORLD FOOD DAY

The theme of this year’s observance is United Against Hunger, chosen to recognize the efforts made in the fight against world hunger at national, regional and international levels to defeat hunger, extreme poverty and malnutrition.
On this World Food Day 2010, when there have never been so many hungry people in the world, let us reflect on the future. With willpower, courage and persistence – and many players working together and helping each other – more food can be produced, more sustainably, for the mouths of those who need it most.

POVERTY
The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is celebrated every year on October 17 throughout the world, and is officially recognised by the United Nations
to honour victims of poverty, hunger, violence and fear. This call was originally made by a Joseph Wresinski who stated that  "Wherever men and women are condemned to live in extreme poverty, human rights are violated. To come together to ensure that these rights be respected is our solemn duty".The commemoration of October 17 also reflects the willingness of people living in poverty to use their expertise to contribute to its eradication.
