WORLD DAYS
On December 14, 1990 the United Nations General Assembly voted to establish October 1 as the International Day of Older Persons. The day was observed for the first time in 1991, to raise awareness about issues affecting the elderly, such as senescence and elder abuse. It is also a day to appreciate the contributions that older people make to society, and especially family life. October 1 is also observed annually as World Vegetarian Day “To promote the joy, compassion and life-enhancing possibilities of vegetarianism. It brings awareness to the ethical, environmental, health and humanitarian benefits of a vegetarian lifestyle”. The first Monday in October is officially designated by the United Nations as World Habitat Day, to reflect on the state of our cities and towns and the basic human right to adequate shelter. It also aims to remind the world of its collective responsibility for the habitat of future generations. October 2 which is the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, is observed as the International Day of Non-Violence. World Animal Day is celebrated on October 4 which is the feast day of Francis of Assisi, a nature lover and patron saint of animals and the environment. World Teachers' Day, held annually on October 5th since 1994, commemorates teachers’ organizations worldwide. Its aim is to mobilise support for teachers and to ensure that the needs of future generations will continue to be met by teachers. October 6 is World Hospice and Palliative Care Day.

TIDY TOWNS
Our annual Table Quiz is being held on Friday October 29 at the Cu Chulainn, and we look forward to the usual evening of light hearted fun and friendly entertainment, which has always been well supported for which we are grateful. Nothing too serious except that we need to raise funds to start off our programme for next year. We look forward to seeing you there, and will give more details nearer the time. We were disappointed to discover the damage which has already been caused to the newly grassed area adjacent to the refurbished wall. Some irresponsible lorry driver decided to park his vehicle there, and took away a section on his departure leaving a holy show in his wake. We intend to make provisions to prevent a repeat of the vandalism caused. We have enough to do without having to repair or clear up after other people’s recklessness.
