The Assumption is a major festival, and is known as Pattern Day, in communities and parishes where Mary is the Patron Saint. Other communities have different dates for their Pattern Day depending who the Patron Saint is. The word pattern is derived from the Irish word paturn having the same meaning as the English word patron.
