TIDY TOWNS
Our AGM took place on Tuesday February 23, despite the onset of wintry
conditions early in the evening. The official business of reports and
election of officers was quickly dealt with, and the group was happy to
re-elect Sam Milburn as Chairperson, and Rita Madigan as Treasurer. Rita was
thanked for her diligence in presenting the balance sheet, and for keeping
our heads above water financially. The chairman's report gave a brief
account of the past year's activities, and thanked everyone for their
efforts even though there was disappointment in not retaining the Limerick
in Bloom Trophy. It was pleasing to note that the group's numbers have grown
to twenty two, all with one purpose in mind, and that is to continue to take
pride in and improve the overall appearance of Patrickswell. We continue to
enjoy the goodwill of the wider community, and also acknowledge the support
and generosity of the business community. At the commencement of our tenth
year of operations we remain committed to our original aims, and will
continue to carry out our work to the very best of our ability. We look
forward to Patrickswell again being the talking point of the county during
the summer months, awards or no awards.
WORLD DAYS
Next Monday March 8 is recognized annually by the United Nations as International Women’s Day, and is a major day of global celebration for the economic, political and social achievements of women. Initially a political event, the first observance was on February 28, 1909 in the United States. In many countries the political emphasis has been replaced, and it has become the custom for men folk to present some flowers or a small gift to the women in their lives. Mums and grandparents also receive small tokens from the children in the family, not unlike St. Valentines Day and Mother’s Day all rolled into one.
GAA PRESENTATION
Last Thursday the Cu Chulainn was awash with legendary hurling stars of yesteryear at a function to mark the launch of the Michael O’Brien Senior Hurling Tournament. The occasion had been organised by the O’Brien family who have donated a Perpetual Memorial Cup to Patrickswell GAA Club, in memory of Michael Snr. who died in 2008 at the age of 87. He was a founder member of the club in 1947, served a term as treasurer, was also president for many years, and in his playing days was a prolific full back. The magnificent trophy will be contested by the four neighbouring parishes of Patrickswell, Ballybrown, Croom and Adare in March. The family have also generously sponsored the medals for the tournament. Michael’s widow Josie, together with her two sons Micheál, John and his wife Carol, and grand daughters Kelly and Ciara, were proudly in attendance to officially hand over the trophy to the Chairman of Patrickswell GAA, Paul Foley.
LIVE RADIO SHOW
Last Friday West Limerick 102fm presented two shows live from the Patrickswell Community Resource Centre. The shows were presented by Seamus Hogan and Joe McGill, produced by Sheila O’Regan, along with Des O’Sullivan, Jonathon Meehan and Connie Broderick. Both slots were a showcase of what the people and organisations in Patrickswell are made of, they should be very proud of themselves, because the talent and commitment of people in the village and surrounding areas is commendable.
The first show opened with Ciaran Crowe from Patrickswell National School who spoke about the green and white flag, accompanying him were some of his very talented pupils, who gave an excellent musical recital. Evelyn Doran spoke as editor of the Patrickswell Newsletter, she was followed by Teresa Putt administrator at the Resource Centre, Liam Shinnors spoke about the Credit Union, and Community Council, John Leddin and Fergus Kilcoyne represented the businesses in the village. Tidy Town’s was represented by Sam Millburn, who spoke about the excellent work carried out each year in the village, he was followed by Russell Ferris from Limerick Racecourse, and to conclude the first show was Ger McNamara, a local champion weight lifter. The second show was highlighted by the Friday Club, who had great chat and lively input throughout. Neilus Hayes represented the Patrickswell GAA, and Karl Quane spoke on behalf on the Soccer Club. Sally Walsh spoke well about the history of the Patrickswell, followed by Mary Delee, who is an excellent organiser of fundraising in the area. John O’Shea sang “The town I love so well” magnificently as usual, and the final guests were David Bulfin, and Paul O’Connor, teachers from Patrickswell National School, who spoke about their roles as teachers, and their involvement in sports. Both shows were not only informative, but very enjoyable. The Resource Centre was a hive of activity throughout the day, it was a great venue for the radio station to be able to present their programmes from. Well done to all who contributed to the day’s success.
