SCHOOLS QUIZ

MPCC Credit Union, invited local primary schools within its catchment area to participate in the first stage of the nationwide 2010 Credit Union Schools Quiz competition. The local heat took place in Mungret / St. Paul’s GAA Club on Saturday, January 30. 30 teams took part involving 120 children. The schools that took part were Patrickswell National School, St. Paul’s, Dooradoyle, St. Nessan’s, Mungret, Ballybrown National School and Educate Together School, Mungret. The questions compiled by primary school teachers, covered such general topics as geography, history, music, literature and sport. The rivalry was intense but at the end of the day it was all about taking part and the children enjoying the event. There were two different age categories. Competition A was for children up to 10 years and competition B was for children aged 11 and 12. There was great competition and local rivalry in both categories and the standard was very high. In the end only 2 points separated first and second in the younger age group and only one point separated the top two places in the older age group. The winning team in each category now progresses to the regional chapter final, which will take place in early March. The winning team from St. Nessan’s National School in the younger age group included Aisling Montana-King, Cathal Quane, Megan Gallagher and Emily O’Driscoll. The winning team from St. Nessan’s in the older age category included Cian Madden, Dan O’Brien, Aoibhe Murtagh and Robert Fitzgerald.

Commenting on the Schools Quiz, Tim Ryan, Chairman of MPCC Credit Union said “last year, St. Nessan’s National School in Mungret made it all the way to the National Final. They have now won both age categories this year and we are hopeful that both of their teams who have now made it through to the regional heat can go one step further this year and claim the National title. Thanks to the children and their teachers and parents for taking part and making this such a successful event. The Schools Quiz is not only about involving credit unions with their members and potential members, or just about winning, but it’s also about learning and teamwork for all entrants. It’s about investing in our children’s future”.
