DIABETES

This Saturday is designated as World Diabetes Day, and has been held on November 14 since 1991, when it was introduced by the International Diabetes Federation and the World Health Organisation. The day marks the diabetes world’s awareness campaign and has “Diabetes Education and Prevention” as its theme for 2009 to 2013. Although the campaign continues all year, the day itself is the birth date of Frederick Banting who was instrumental in discovering insulin in 1922. The World Diabetes Day logo is the blue circle which was adopted in 2007. For more information log on to www.worlddiabetesday.org, www.diabetesireland.ie, or contact the Diabetes Federation of Ireland helpline on 1850 909 909.

BURNING ISSUE

New regulations are now in place regarding the burning of household or garden waste, and in a joint approach, the County Council, City Council, Regional Waste Management Office, and the Environmental Protection Agency, are reminding the public that such activity is damaging to the environment, your health, and in some cases your pocket, as a fine of €3000 is now in place for breaches of the regulations (S.I. 286 of 2009) which state that it is illegal to dispose of household or garden waste by burning inside or outside any part of a house or garden. This is generally referred to as backyard burning, and is responsible for over fifty percent of dioxin emissions.

WEST LIMERICK VOLUNTEER FAIR

The Volunteer Support Service will hold its annual Volunteer Fair this Saturday November 14 in the Desmond College Newcastle West from 11am to 4pm. COFFEE MORNING

Winter is well and truly with us and it's not always easy for some to get out of the house and meet people. We now have a coffee morning every Wednesday from 10am to 12noon, come along to the Resource Centre, chat with your neighbours, and sit and relax in welcoming surroundings. For those who have transport, and have neighbours who would like to attend, why not bring them along with you, all are welcome.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Age Action Ireland are organising free basic computer classes for the over 55's at the Patrickswell Community Resource Centre. The aim of the "Getting Started" programme is to make older people comfortable using computers. Class sizes are small, with one volunteer tutor for every couple of students. Both the volunteers and the older people find the classes rewarding and fun. For volunteers, basic computer skills are needed, but patience and good humour are just as important, training is provided.

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer in Patrickswell, please contact Teresa on 061-320303, or e-mail patrickswellcrc@gmail.com
