The following day Saturday 21 is the 37th annual World Hello Day. Anyone can participate in World Hello Day simply by greeting ten people to demonstrate the importance of personal communication for preserving peace. It was begun in response to the conflict between Egypt and Israel in 1973. Since then, World Hello Day has been observed by people in 180 countries who use the occasion as an opportunity to express their concern for world peace, and to encourage leaders to use communication rather than force to settle conflicts. As a global event World Hello Day joins local participation in a global expression of peace. The web site is http://www.worldhelloday.org.

MPCC CREDIT UNION

The recent ‘C U Safe to School’ road safety campaign was a huge success with all the primary schools in the area, but most importantly the level of road safety awareness was increased amongst the children. Pupils from all schools returned entry forms and there were almost 450 correct entries. The lucky winner was Abbie O’Brien of Ballybrown National School who was presented with her new bicycle at a presentation ceremony at the Dooradoyle office of MPCC Credit Union. Thank you to Cycling Pursuits in Patrickswell for their support. Wishing you safe and happy cycling Abbie.

At the same presentation, the winners of the poster competition also received their prizes. Amongst the prizewinners were students from Gael Scoil Raithin, Patrickswell National School and Enable Ireland in Mungret. Congratulations to all the prize winners and thank you to all who entered the competition. The winners of each category will now be sent forward to the Regional Chapter stage of the competition. Continuing the winning theme, John McNamara of Raheen was recently selected as the lucky winner of the 25th Anniversary Members Draw for October. John is the recipient of the prize, kindly sponsored by Copytype. The draw continues again this month and all members who carry out a transaction on their account are automatically entered. This month’s draw prize has been very generously sponsored by Ger Browne Printing. If you are living in the area and are not already a member, you are more than welcome to open an account with MPCC, your local Credit Union. Please note that photo ID and proof of address is required for all new accounts.

WASTE REDUCTION

European Week for Waste Reduction runs from this Saturday November 21 to Sunday 28 to inform European citizens of the simple actions that they can take in everyday life to help contribute to waste reduction. It aims to raise awareness on preventing the production of waste, that is to say, everything that can and should be done to prevent throwing an item away, so as to reduce the amount of waste that is submitted for collection and to reduce the harmfulness of the waste generated. Household waste has doubled in weight in 40 years and has been growing steadily at a rate of 1 to 2% per year. Everyone is invited to get involved as we all produce waste daily, whether at work, school, home, or shopping. The Environmental Protection Agency has more information at www.epa.ie

GOLF SOCIETY

Frankie Nolan and Tom Dundon teamed up on Sunday last to win a Two Ball scramble in Adare Manor with a fine score of 49.8. They recorded three birdies on their way to victory. Our A.G.M. will be held in the near future, watch these notes for details.

FILM

A film entitled The Human Experience will be screened at the L.I.T. Millenium Theatre this Saturday and Sunday November 21 and 22 at 7-30pm and admission is free.
