TIDY TOWNS

As the trees and hedgerows change colour and shed their leaves, we are reminded that Autumn is the season of great change, and another season of Tidy Towns activity is drawing to a close as we face into the last quarter of 2009. It’s almost time to hang up the brushes and shovels, and put the machinery into hibernation, wondering where the last six months has gone, having commenced operations in the first week of April. The baskets are long gone, but the watering rota is still in operation for “The Wall”, which remains festooned with blooms and colour, and still a talking point near and far. The containers at the shrine, and the bed on the roundabout, are also providing a late burst of colour, and we hope they will continue to do so until nature and the first frosts deem otherwise. The three containers have already been planted with winter pansies, to replace the busy lizzies, which were also a joy to behold for the best part of four months. The grass areas are still showing great growth due to the recent mild weather, and we are still mowing to keep it under control, together with strimming hedges, edges and verges to keep things looking neat and tidy for as long as possible. We were notified this week that the Limerick in Bloom Awards are being announced at a ceremony on Tuesday October 20 at the Woodlands, and we eagerly await the results.

POSITIVE AGEING WEEK

Age Action Ireland has been coordinating a programme of events to promote Positive Ageing Week, which was launched by President McAleese on September 25, and runs until this Saturday October 3. Positive Ageing is the term chosen to encapsulate all we are trying to do to make Ireland the best place in which to grow old. It means a society in which people of all ages enjoy the same status and rights. It is a festival which highlights the positive aspects of ageing and celebrates the contribution older people have made and continue to make to their communities. The central aim is to dispel the many negative perceptions that surround ageing and to transform attitudes towards ageing and older people. We need to celebrate the fact that we are living longer, that ageing is not a burden but an opportunity. This Thursday, October 1, has been designated as the United Nations International Day of Older Persons.
