COMMUNITY COUNCIL

The Community Council would like to wish council member James Shinnors a speedy recovery from his recent operation. We are sure he'll be fit and able for the return of the 45 drive in September! A Vote of sympathy was passed to the following people on recent bereavements. The Foley family on the death of Martin, Murray family on the death of Edmond, Cussen family on the death of James, Belton family on the death of Carol, Bagnell family on the death of Willie, Murray family on the death of Ann and to Pat Moore on the death of her father. May they rest in Peace. A Caretaker and Secretary will shortly be operating from the Resource House. We hope that this will result in the Resource House being used more by all sections of the Community. We would like to acknowledge the support of Pobal for this venture and also the amount of work undertaken by council member Ann Gill. We would also like to thank West Limerick Resources for their assistance. The Community Council have arranged a meeting for August with Limerick County Council. We have been approached by many people concerning the zoning and proposed sale of the green area near First Steps. It is felt that this open space is important for the village. Congratulations to the Tidy Towns Committee on the outstanding appearance of the village at present. We know that this is the result of much hard work and dedication of the team. Well done to all concerned.

BLOOD DONORS

The Irish Blood Transfusion Service requires 3000 units of blood this week, and donor clinics are being held at the following locations. Monday August 10 at the Greenhills Hotel, Ennis Road, from 6-9pm, Tuesday August11 and Wednesday August 12 at Scoil Mhuire agus Ide, Newcastlewest from 6-9pm. For more information contact the Donor Information Line on 1850 731137, or www.ibts.ie

SHOWS

Many local people will be heading for Cappamore later in the month either as spectators or exhibitors, for the Annual Agricultural Show, which is being staged there on Wednesday August 19. Famous for being granted fine weather since it was moved to a weekday from a Sunday, the show promises its usual wealth of displays and competitions. Let’s hope that the show, which is in its 55th year continues to be blessed with fine weather. This will be followed by the Limerick Show which is being held at Greenmount Racecourse on Sunday August 23. Several Patrickswell residents were successful in the various competitions last year and came away with prizes for their culinary skills, arts and crafts, horticulture and animal classes. Good luck to all who are entering this year’s competitions.

CONCERT

The proceeds from the concert, sale of DVD’S, and private donations have all been counted, and last week Sr. Phyllis from Milford Hospice was presented with a cheque for €4200. Julie would again like to thank everyone involved in helping to raise this amount for such a worthy cause.

SYMPATHY

It was with profound and heartfelt sadness that the community learned of the passing of Dickie Bennis, beloved son of Richie and Mary of Lurriga. Dickie passed away peacefully last Wednesday with his loving family at his side. Huge numbers visited the family home where he was reposing on Friday, to pay their last respects, and there was also a large attendance at his Requiem Mass on Saturday, prior to being laid to rest in the local graveyard. To Richie and Mary, his two sisters, Alison and Imelda, and his two brothers, Kieran and Anthony we extend our sincere sympathy. May Dickie rest in peace.

FAMILY DAY

The Community Council intends to hold a Family Day in September, with the intention of raising funds for Coisceim Eile, a registered charity that purchased the Lokomat device for the First Steps Rehabilitation Centre in Patrickswell. The council are hopeful that all groups in the community will be able to offer their services on the day. More details to follow shortly.

GOLF

There is still time to enter a team for the fund raising Golf Classic on Friday August 28 in Adare Manor Golf Club in support of Patrickswell GAA. If any one would like to support this fund raiser by sponsoring a team of four or a tee box please contact Oliver Mann or Kieran Darcy or any member of the committee. Congratulations to John Murphy, Timmy Sheehan and Kieran Darcy who were among the prize winners in a team of three competition at Adare Manor Golf Club at the weekend.
