MUSICIANS
Friends Of The Elderly are appealing to musicians everywhere to give an hour of their time on a regular basis to entertain the sick and elderly who are in long term hospital wards. They are there often for long periods, and the routines of the day combined with few visitors, can be very boring and lacking in stimulation. Anyone interested in assisting in this scheme is asked to contact 01-8731855 for further information.
WELCOME
Another new business has taken up residence on Main Street, so welcome to Patrickswell to Cycling Pursuits which was formerly situated on the Dock Road.
MISS LIMERICK
Local girl Tanika Delee is taking part in the Miss Limerick competition this Friday which is being staged in the Trinity Rooms. Family and friends wish you the best of luck Tanika.
TIDY TOWNS
We were disappointed but not necessarily surprised to hear during the week that there will be no County Environment Awards this year, due to the current financial situation of the County Council, which as reported last week is somewhere in the region of some €12million euro worse off than this time last year. We had high hopes of improving our placing from last year when we were awarded Third Tidiest Village in County Limerick. However, that has not detracted from our overall efforts as we gear up for the second Limerick in Bloom, and all is as ready as it can be for the judging of that competition, assuming that the judging has not taken place already. All we know is that judging is to take place from mid July to mid August. Our last major task was to finish the clean up at the Limerick side of the roundabout, and that was completed at the weekend with the help of Willy Murray and his trusty steed, under the watchful eye of Mossie Carmody. Mossie also put in many hours during the week strimming at the roundabout and trimming the shrubbery. On Friday evening several passing motorists stopped to pass comment about how well the entire village is looking. There was also mention on Saturday’s early morning programme on Limerick Live 95fm, “ In the County”. Litter , or the absence of it will be a major factor in the competition, and all members will be on their guard to ensure that we are not unnecessarily penalized. Another improvement has been the painting of the derelict house opposite Rossville which was undertaken by Paddy Keilly, and has since been further improved by the addition of windows with curtains, and a blue door which was very kindly carried out by artist Bridgitte O’Shea.
FINE GAEL
The Fine Gael Organisation would like to thank all those who contributed to their collection recently. Your support is much appreciated .The next meeting of the local Branch will take place in September and all new members are welcome.
GOLF CLASSIC
Patrickswell G.A.A. club will be holding a fund raising Golf Classic on Friday August 28 in Adare Manor Golf Club. Your support for this venture would be greatly appreciated as to put out the countless number of adult and under age teams that the club does on a weekly basis is a drain on funds. If any one would like to support this fund raiser by sponsoring a team of four or sponsoring a tee box please contact Oliver Mann or Kieran Darcy or any member of the committee.
SYMPATHY
The community was saddened to hear of the passing of William Bagnell of Jockey Hall, Crecora. Willie, as he was more affectionately and respectfully known, is survived by his loving and extended family of four sons, three daughters, and eighteen grandchildren. His removal was from Daffy’s in Croom on Thursday evening, and his Requiem Mass at St. Peter and Paul’s church Crecora on Friday at 11-30, was followed by burial in Hospital Cemetery. The large crowds who came to pay their last respects were an indication of the esteem and high regard that Willie was held in, and was a source of great comfort to the family. He was a builder by trade, and was brought out of retirement a few years ago to construct the arch for a fund raising wedding which his daughter Noreen was organizing. There followed further calls on his talents and abilities the following year, when he constructed a boat for another fund raising concert. The boat was aptly named the “Willie B”, and it gave Willie great pleasure to read about his boat in the rehearsal reports, and then to proudly post off the newspaper to his family in Australia. Willie was one of nature’s gentlemen, and will be sadly missed. He will be lovingly remembered as a man who lived an active and fulfilled life by all those whose pleasure it was to have known him and be associated with. May he rest in peace.
