ART DISPLAY

This weekend there will be a display of art work on show in the church, which has been produced by the Christian Community in Bethlehem. With few pilgrims and tourists visiting the Holy Places because of the unrest there, the income of many families has all but disappeared, and they are experiencing serious poverty. Items on display will be available to purchase, which will go someway to relieving their poverty, and you are asked to be as supportive as possible.

BLOOD DONORS

The Irish Blood Transfusion Service requires 3000 units of blood this week. Local blood donor sessions are being held at the following locations; Monday July 20 at the Dunraven Arms Hotel, Adare, from 6 to 9pm, and Wednesday July 22 at St.John’s Pavilion, Mulgrave Street, from 5 to 8pm. For more information contact the Donor Information Line on 1850 731137, or www.ibts.ie

GOLF SOCIETY

We held our Nenagh outing last Saturday July 11 in very mixed conditions, with the first half of the draw enjoying the dull but dry conditions and the second half going out in atrocious wet weather. Timmie Sheehan had one of the best rounds of his golfing career so far with a fine score of 2 over par . His round consisted of twelve pars, four bogies and two birdies. His stableford score was 43 points. The full results were as follows,

1st, Timmie Sheehan 43 points. Category A, 1st Derek O’Curry 39 points, 2 nd Gary Kirby 38 points. Category B, 1st Paul O’Grady 37 points, 2nd Stephen Conway 35 points. Front 9, Tommy Kelly 20 points, Back 9, Mark Leahy 20 points.

A special word of congratulations must go to John Keyes who joined that elite club of the hole in one achievers, having achieved a Hole in One by virtue of his ace at the Par Three eight at the outing. Gary Kirby was in the prizes in his club, Charleville, in The O’Connor cup stroke play competition with a fine score of 66 net playing off a handicap of 11. He was just pipped for first place by virtue of the countback. Timmie Sheehan continues to show his good form by winning the Gross Prize in The Aughinish Captain’s Prize held in Ardagh. Our deepest sympathies go at this time to Jimmy Murray and his family on the recent bereavement of Ann, may she rest in peace.

CONCERT DVD

The launch of the DVD of the recent rock concert, which was in aid of Milford Hospice will go ahead this Saturday July 18, in the Cu Chulainn bar commencing at 9-30pm. Proceeds from the sale of the DVD will be added to the proceeds already raised. Admission is free, and there will also be spot prizes and a raffle on the night. It is hoped to present a cheque to Milford in the not too distant future. Julie would again like to thank all concerned for their help and support with the venture.

MISS LIMERICK

All good wishes and the best of luck from family and friends to local girl Tanika Delee, who will be taking part in the Miss Limerick competition, which is being staged next Friday July 24, in the Trinity Rooms. We wish you well Tanika.

TIDY TOWNS

The weather was against us for most of the week, but we still managed to get some jobs done. The hedges at the bus stop have been trimmed and thinned, and will hopefully be easier to maintain in the future. We were also able to strim under the railings from First Steps to the roundabout. A small bed has been introduced to the area from where the overgrown shrubbery was recently removed, and the grass seed is also beginning to shoot. The broken pots at the roundabout have been replaced, and some new ones added to the green area opposite Lucey’s. We also took delivery of some fresh bark mulch on Thursday, which was used to freshen up the shrubbery adjacent to Centra, and also the rose bed opposite Lucey’s. Thanks to all concerned who responded at short notice to spread the mulch, and also to Tommy at Van Veens for his cooperation with the delivery. We just need one more assault strimming and trimming the areas adjacent to the roundabout and the approach from Limerick. There has been activity too in Sycamore Heights and Laurel Park with residents joining forces to tidy up their areas, and the area at the rear of First Steps, on the old Limerick Road, has also received attention.

SIGHT TESTING CLINIC

Test clinics will be held at Plunketts Pharmacy, Croom, on Tuesday afternoons. Free testing is available with Medical Cards or Social Welfare, and also includes tests for Glaucoma Screening and Driving Reports. For appointments contact Eibhlis at 061-397272.

GAA

Congratulations to the Limerick Senior Hurlers who overcame the challenge of Wexford with a two point victory in the phase two qualifier. All eyes are now on this weekend’s encounter with Laois. Good luck to all the team, management and mentors.
