This Friday, June 7, The Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, is First Friday of the month, when communion will be distributed to the sick. If you know anyone who is sick or housebound who would like to receive communion on Friday, please hand in their names to the sacristy. Saturday, June 8 is The Immaculate Heart of Mary. The weekly prayer meeting returns on Monday June 10 and all are welcome. Items for inclusion in the weekly Parish Newsletter should be handed into the sacristy by 9-30am on Friday or contact Fr. FR. CON COLLINS RIP: The Month’s Mind Mass of the late Fr.Cornelius Collins, took place in the church of The Blessed Virgin, Patrickswell, last Friday May 31. His close family members were in attendance including his brother and two sisters, as well as his extended family of nieces and nephews, who gave the readings and offered the Prayers of the Faithful, together with the many parishioners who had come to pay their very last respects to Fr.Con. Up to twenty fellow priests of Fr.Con, representing all sections of the diocese were also in attendance, and the celebrant was Fr Frank O’Dea, Parish Priest of Dromcollogher-Broadford. The homily was given by Canon James Costello, Parish Priest of Bruff, who delivered a very heartfelt, sincere and often humorous account of Fr.Con’s past and many wonderful qualities which endeared him to many. Echoing everyone’s sentiments, a family member remarked that we were all so fortunate to have had him in our lives for so long, and to experience his kindness, humanity and respect. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
EUCHARISTIC ADORATION: There will be Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament in Patrickswell Church on Saturdays from 8am until 12noon, and in Ballybrown on Wednesday from 6 to 8pm.
NOVENA: Fr. John Goode, CSsR, from the Redemptorist Community at Mount St. Alphonsus, spoke at all masses last weekend regarding the forthcoming Novena to Our Lady of Perpetual Help. He extended a warm invitation for all to attend the annual festival of faith, and to encourage participation in the celebration of prayer and devotion. This year’s theme is, “Stand firm in the faith”, which will reflect on the outcomes of Vatican II fifty years on. Leaflets are available with details of times, support services and special events during the nine day festival. The novena can also be seen and heard live on the internet, at www.novena.ie
REMEMBRANCE SERVICE: At 3pm this Sunday, June 9, a Remembrance Service will be held in St. Paul’s Church, Dooradoyle. The service will be one of hope and support for families to remember their loved ones who passed away at the Regional Hospital during the last twelve months. Those attending are invited to bring a photograph or a symbol of their loved one, if they so wish to place in the Remembrance Area during the service.
BLOOD DONORS: The Irish Blood Transfusion Service will facilitate donor clinics in Caherdavin, Raheen, Mulgrave St. and Knockainey the week commencing Monday June 17. You can visit any blood donor clinic as long as ninety days have elapsed since you last gave blood, and you are urged to please give regularly. AL-ANON: A meeting of Al-Anon will be held this Sunday, June 9, in the Pastoral Centre, Denmark St, Limerick, from 2 to 3pm. It is open to the public and will feature a number of Al-Anon speakers, and an AA speaker who will share their stories and experiences, which are stories of strength and hope.
POSITIVE LIVING ACTIVITIES: The Resource House was a hive of activity last Friday, which commenced in the morning with a hands-on demonstration of planting pots, baskets and other containers with summer flowers. This was facilitated by the Active Retirement Group and the VEC gardening tutor, Ailish Drake, and was the last of this term’s gardening classes. Many thanks to Ailish again for an inspiring course, and for taking such an interest in us and our gardening. In the afternoon a session on the very interesting and thought provoking subject of Upcycling was given, reminding all in attendance that maybe there is a use for the many things we are inclined to consign to the rubbish bin.
DONKEY DERBY: As part of this year’s fund raising, the Community Council will be holding a Donkey Derby and Family Fun Day at McSweeney’s farm on Sunday July 14. The event, which was a great success and very enjoyable last year, will feature a range of stalls and attractions. The cost for setting up a stall will be only €20, and all enquiries regarding stalls, entering donkeys, or any other information can be directed to the Community Council at 061-320303, or any of the council committee members. The donation of unused quality gift items for the raffle or Wheel of Fortune would also be gratefully accepted.
FLORA OF COUNTY LIMERICK: A hardback book entitled the Flora of County Limerick, 2013, has just been published, and is a first on the subject, featuring over 1100 accounts of flora growing in the wild from the Shannon Estuary to the Galty Mountains. It gives their frequency, distribution and habitats in the county, with first and historical records. It is the result of some thirty years of fieldwork and research by botanist Sylvia Reynolds. From later this week, it will be available at O’Mahony’s Bookshop, and Celtic Books, Rutland Street, opposite the Hunt Museum. It will be a useful resource for people interested in Limerick's wild plants or who might be doing botanicalresearch in the county. See Botanic Gardens Website for more information.
