TIDY TOWNS: Our preparations continue for the two competitions we are entering this year, National Tidy Towns for the first time and Limerick in Bloom, and the most of the last two weeks have been taken up with the cleaning of McSweeney’s wall. Two of the volunteers who helped us clean up at Marian Park a few weeks ago are still engaged with us on Tuesdays, and we are grateful to Noeleen Mulqueen and Mary Carroll for staying the trip, their energy, enthusiasm and humour is infectious and very welcome. One more assault should complete the cleaning of the wall. Richie Bennis and Mossie Carmody have been busy with some additions and minor repairs to the stonework at various locations. Litter, or its absence, will feature highly in the adjudication of both competitions, and with the recent departure of Pat Mackessy from the post of roadman, members have also been busy on an almost daily basis ensuring that the village and approach roads are as litter free as possible. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Pat for his efforts over the last few years in keeping Patrickswell clean and tidy. Unofficially we have heard that a replacement has been appointed, and hopefully will start in the not too distant future. Until then and during this month and next we urge everyone, residents and businesses alike, to be litter conscious, and to play your part by keeping your own areas clean and tidy, and especially litter free. With the weather as it is, the watering crews have had a relatively easy start as the baskets and containers are fairly saturated. We need some warmth to dry them out, and also to encourage some growth, as nothing seems to be flourishing at the moment.
DONKEY DERBY: The unsettled and frequent showery weather on Sunday, failed to dampen the spirits or enthusiasm of the organisers of the Donkey Derby, which was held at Mike McSweeney’s grounds, Collopy’s Cross. Neither did the weather prevent a large and appreciative crowd from attending, to support the numerous stalls and attractions which were on offer, all to raise funds for the Community Development Fund. There was great interest in the main feature of the afternoon, which was the donkey derby itself, consisting of heats, a final, and a race specifically for local riders, all eloquently and humorously commentated on by Francie Nash. Mike Mc Sweeney, chairperson of the community council was relieved that all their hard work and preparations had come good, and was very pleased with the support from the community. It is hoped to run a similar event next year.
CARDS: The recent 45Drive at the Resource House, which was organised by James Shinnors, in aid of Milford care Centre, raised €1220, which has been forwarded and acknowledged. Thanks to all who supported the event.
FEILE: Good luck and all good wishes to the players, mentors and management representing the parish as they travel to Feile na nGael in St.Vincent’s, Marino, Dublin, this Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
RESURFACING: The county council’s programme of road resurfacing finally reached Killonahan last week, and the first stage to Ballylusky has now been completed. The crews involved are to be complimented on their courtesy and consideration to the residents of the areas concerned, and for keeping the disruption and inconvenience to a minimum.
DIGITAL SWITCHOVER: West Limerick Resources is now seeking volunteers to help raise awareness of the switch to digital television, which takes place on October 24. Help is needed to identify older people living alone, those with literacy and other learning difficulties and those with few social networks who may not be aware of the change or who may need basic information on how to make the switch. The Community Outreach Digital Switchover Programme is heavily reliant on the Irish tradition of caring for our neighbours and we are asking communities to look around and help identify those locally who will need a little assistance and make sure that they get it. For further information contact Clint at West Limerick Resources on 069 62222
NEW BUS SERVICE: Patrickswell Taxi Service will be operating a bus service from Patrickswell to Colaiste Ciarain, Croom, starting in September,
