OBITUARY: The death is sadly announced of John Bourke, formerly of Rathmore and Kilderry, Crecora, last remaining brother of May Mullane of Killonahan, Patrickswell. John and his brother Frank, deceased, and their sisters, Alice, deceased, Kitty and Teresa, all emigrated to England in 1954, on the day that May’s daughter Mary was born. For many years he enjoyed his holidays back to his home country, visiting sometimes twice a year, and in particular would always pay a visit to their father Jim Bourke’s grave in Croom, and to Dempsey’s bar in Meanus for a pint of plain and a small one. It was only in recent years that he had to give up driving due to the onset of ill health, and then his younger son Sean took over the driving, for the holidays to continue, from which John derived so much pleasure and enjoyment. Whenever he visited Killonahan, he would always walk to the top of the hill, and breathe in deep lungs full of air, with the comment, “ This air is like wine, you don’t get air like this where I am in England”. It was as if he was taking enough air in to last him until his next visit. His most recent visit, which was in June of this year, was unfortunately to be his last. He is survived by his devoted wife Winnie, nee Kelly of Monaghan, sons Noel and Sean, daughter Bernadette, and remaining sisters, and an extended family of loving grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Bealtaine chuid eile dá anam i síocháin. Bás fhágann croí aching féidir aon duine a leigheas, duilleoga grá cuimhne féidir aon duine a ghoid.
TIDY TOWNS: We are happy to report that the remaining beds and containers are still providing a welcome show of colour, even as October is now upon us, and another year of activity draws to a close. There may be an opportunity later to cut the grass for the last time, and also to trim shrubs and hedges. We also wait with eager anticipation for the announcement of when the Limerick in Bloom awards will take place. Finally we would like to invite everyone to our annual table quiz, which will take place on Friday October 21st, in the Cu Chulainn, commencing at 9pm. A table of four is still only 20euro, which is great value for what is always an enjoyable and fun filled evening. We look forward to seeing you there.
BOXERCISE: Boxercise classes take place every Wednesday evening from 7-8pm in Mungret GAA hall. All are welcome. Contact John On 087-9115411 for more information.
WORLD HOSPICE DAY: This Saturday, October 8, is World Hospice and Palliative Care Day. The theme for World Day 2011 is, "Many diseases, many lives, many voices - palliative care for non-communicable conditions". The day celebrates and supports hospice and palliative care around the world, and will focus on how people living with conditions which are not infectious can benefit from palliative care.
As well as as a vision to increase the availability of hospice and palliative care throughout the world, it also aims to raise awareness and understanding of the various needs, including medical, social, practical, and spiritual, of people living with a life limiting illness and their families.
