TIDY TOWNS:
Our preparations for this year’s planting moved up a gear this week, and there were no less than fifteen of us out last Tuesday night. Although heavy showers were quite persistent, many hands made light work and sixty two grow bags were placed on the wall and cut open ready for planting. The beds and containers on the roundabout were prepared, and also the bed at Marian Park roundabout. Two mowers and two strimmers were also in action. We are always looking for extra help and this year we are delighted to welcome to our ranks Des Fitz, more familiar as the church organist. Not a gardener by his own admission but his contribution is very welcome and very much appreciated. As well as leading the church choir, Des has shown his versatility and is also well able to knock a fine tune out of the strimmer. The new tiered beds at the entrance to Shannon Development are almost complete thanks to Mossie and Richie. Mossie has also put in many hours transferring top soil to various planting areas, ably assisted by John Riordan. Vince Doherty has also been involved bringing soil to the area at the roundabout. Every little job makes a big difference. On Saturday evening we were horrified to learn that vandals had taken the hose from behind the wall at the roundabout, stretched it across the road and tied it to one of the road signs, causing major disruption to traffic. This was clearly a stupid and dangerous act which could have resulted in a serious accident or even fatalities. Not content with that, the vandals then turned their attention to the grow bags on the wall, and threw off several, emptying the contents onto the ground.
Gardai were called and responded, while members were replacing the bags, but within half an hour, the culprits returned to repeat their mindless vandalism. Unconfirmed reports suggest that three female juvenile delinquents were involved in the incidents which is a worrying development, and one which we hope will not be repeated.
