It is led by the International Union Against  Cancer who initiated the campaign in 2005. The UICC is a global consortium of more than 280 cancer-fighting organizations in over 90         countries. World Cancer Day targets the public through global communications marking, and encourages policy makers and UICC member organizations to make cancer a political priority. The campaign emphasizes that 40% of cancers can be prevented through these healthy behaviors; providing a smoke-free environment for children, be physically active, eat a balanced, healthy diet, and avoid obesity, learn about vaccines for virus-related liver and cervical cancers, and avoid over-exposure to the sun. The focus for this year’s campaign will be to teach children and teenagers to avoid UV exposure by being "sun smart".

TIDY TOWNS

Our first meeting for 2001 was held last Tuesday January 25, and was well attended. Many ideas were discussed regarding this years planting with plans materialising for existing containers and beds, and new ones that have been added already, much to our own surprise even. After our meeting on Tuesday we sought the help of Mick O’Dea to provide containers around the trees outside the wall at the shrine, as last year’s plan did not materialise. Not one for letting the grass grow under his feet, Mick had sourced, prepared and installed the new containers by Thursday. Thank you Mick, and also Mossie Carmody and Liam Foley for filling them with topsoil ready for planting. We have also received positive offers of help in response to our appeal for some filling material and top soil to enable us to level off and reseed the area and the bank approaching the village from the Limerick end. This is a relatively minor job, and will greatly enhance the appearance of that area, and also make it easier to maintain. We haven’t the machinery or resources to do this on our own but are hopeful of bringing that project to a satisfactory conclusion quite soon. Why wait for things to happen when they can be made to happen? With the promise of additions to our ranks when our work starts in April, the year is off to a flying start. The next meeting will be on Tuesday February 22, which will be the AGM. With the election now called there will be the usual plethora of posters appearing on every available post, pole, road sign, nook and cranny. We will be keeping a close eye for their timely removal after the election as they will then constitute litter. In the past we have also found posters stuffed behind walls, pushed into ditches, or just left for others to deal with.
