Our next outing will be in Killorglan on Saturday June 12.

TIDY TOWNS

Our preparations for the summer planting scheme continue. All the containers which were the victims of frost during the winter have now been replaced. The three box ball shrubs at the roundabout were moved to their new containers, and the top soil which has been wintering adjacent to the wall at the roundabout has now been levelled and grass seed sown. The containers and our famous wall have been filled with fresh compost ready for commencement of this year’s planting scheme, and it will be all systems go once the weather and conditions are in our favour. We were notified this week, quite surprisingly, that the County Council is re-instating the garden competition for Urban Roadside and Rural Roadside gardens. Application forms are available from the Environment Section at County Hall. For further information telephone 496264. The closing date for entries is Friday June 25th, and judging will take place between July and September.

FUND RAISING DRAW

The Community Council is promoting a draw with a spectacular first prize of Entrance Tickets for four people to the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby, which is being run at The Curragh Racecourse on Sunday June 27. To complement the style of the occasion, the winners will be conveyed to the venue, and returned by Luxury Limo. The draw

will take place on June 20th, in the Dark Horse, and tickets are available at just €5 each from any Community Council member, or at the Resource Centre. Proceeds are in aid of a New Community Development.

WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY

This Saturday, June 5, is recognized by the United Nations as World Environment Day, WED. The purpose of the day is to stimulate awareness of the environment and enhance political attention and public action. The first World Environment Day was in 1973. World Environment Day is hosted every year by a different city with a different theme. This year’s theme is, “Many species, One planet, one future”, and the host city is Kigali in Rwanda.

WORLD OCEAN DAY

Tuesday June 8 has been officially declared by The United Nations as World Ocean Day. It is an opportunity every year to honour the world's ocean, celebrate what the ocean provides, as well as marine life itself and also a time to appreciate its own intrinsic value. The Ocean Project working in partnership with the World Ocean Network have been working to build greater awareness of the crucial role of the ocean in our lives and the important ways people can help. World Ocean Day provides an opportunity to get directly involved in protecting our future, through a new mindset and personal and community action and involvement – beach cleanups, educational programs, art contests, film festivals, sustainable seafood events, and other planned activities help to raise consciousness of how our lives depend on the ocean.

BIKE WEEK

National Bike Week runs from May 14 to 20. Its aim is to promote the use of cycling as part of a healthy lifestyle, in a safe and environmentally friendly way. Many events are taking place up and down the country. For a list of events in Limerick log on to National Bike Week.

SUNFLOWERS

National Sunflower Day is celebrating its twentieth anniversary this year, on Friday and Saturday June 11 and 12, in support of the Irish Hospice Foundation. All money raised locally will be used for hospice care in Limerick. Volunteers are being sought to assist with the fund raising, and promoting awareness. Sunflowers will be available in numerous locations for €2, and badges for €3. Fundraising plays an important ongoing role in the financing of current and developing Palliative Care Services provided by Milford Care Centre throughout Counties Clare, Limerick and North Tipperary.
