TIDY TOWNS

We thank all parishioners most sincerely for the very generous response to the church gate collection last weekend which raised a total of €1230. Our first work party of the year went ahead on a fine evening last Tuesday. The rose bed was pruned and weeded, shrubberies weeded, and weeds were sprayed both sides of the road from the top of the village down to the bottom. Grass was cut at the roundabout, and the palm tree at the shrine which had become a victim of the severe winter was pruned, and hopefully will start to shoot again soon.

WORLD DAYS

Since 2007, April 25 has been designated by the World Health Organization as Malaria Awareness Day, with the intention to focus on all who suffer from this terrible disease especially the millions on the continent of Africa, and to remember the millions more who died from this entirely preventable and treatable disease. April 26 is observed annually as World Intellectual Property Day, to raise awareness of the role of intellectual property in our daily lives, and to celebrate the contribution made by innovators and artists to the development of societies across the globe. This year’s theme is “Innovation- Linking the world”. April 28 is International Workers Memorial Day, a day of remembrance and action for workers killed, disabled, injured or made unwell by their work. Worldwide more than two million women and men die as a result of work-related accidents and diseases every year. April 29 is World Dance Day, which was set up to increase the awareness of the importance of dance, to include it in all systems of education, and to recognise it as an art form.

DAWN CHORUS DAY

Sunday May 2 is International Dawn Chorus Day, an annual celebration of the world’s oldest wake up call, the Dawn Chorus, and the beauty of bird song. For those who want to experience the Dawn Chorus in the wild, it usually starts around 4am. Different areas may have their events on different days. Although the dawn chorus carries on until mid-morning the best time to hear it is the first hour before sunrise, which means getting up early. If you can’t make it along to an event, set your alarm, open your window and let the dawn chorus in.
