TIDY TOWNS
This year’s Limerick in Bloom Awards were announced on Tuesday October 20. There was an increase in the number of entries from twenty seven last year to thirty two. The judges commented on the presentation of the Main Street and the shrine, and the attractive floral arrangements. They were also impressed with the almost complete absence of litter and the participation of business premises, all reflecting a very evident community spirit. Marks were awarded for landscaping, planting, litter control and tidiness, colour and overall impression, and we were awarded second place in category two with a score of seventy nine points. Our Table Quiz went ahead on Friday last with a large gathering of supporters in attendance. P.J.O’Grady, master of wit and repartee was again in charge of proceedings as MC and Question Master, ably assisted by Ann Ronan efficiently collating the scores. We would like to thank all the businesses who very generously sponsored prizes for the raffle, and especially Christy Murphy for hosting us once again, and very generously sponsoring the first table prize. Our heartfelt thanks are also extended to all who came out on the night to support us, and all who have helped us in any way throughout the year.
CREDIT UNION
Now that the clocks have gone back and darkness falling that bit earlier, MPCC Credit Union, has launched its local ‘CU Safe to School’ road safety campaign, which is aimed at helping primary school children within its catchment area to learn effective road safety. With so many children taking to the roads every day to get to and from school, road safety awareness and education are paramount. The campaign was launched
with support from Limerick County Council, the Road Safety Authority, an Garda Síochána and Cycling Pursuits in Patrickswell, in the Dooradoyle office of MPCC Credit Union on October 21st. With over 2,350 pupils in the seven primary schools located within its area, the Credit Union’s Board of Directors felt that it was essential to highlight the importance of road safety amongst the pupils and its Members. At the launch, the local Community Gardaí, Ian Murphy and Cathy Cotter gave a talk on road safety to pupils and their teachers. MPCC Credit Union has sponsored reflective safety armbands and arranged for the distribution of these along with road safety leaflets to the local primary school pupils and is also running a written competition for the children based on the message contained in the road safety leaflets. The competition and its prize of a bicycle are intended to act as an additional encouragement for the children and their parents to read the safety leaflets. Commenting on the ‘CU Safe to School’ campaign, Tim Ryan, Chairman of MPCC Credit Union said “We felt that children are probably at their most vulnerable travelling to and from school and as part of our commitment to the local community and our members, it was our duty to initiate this campaign. Hopefully our local campaign will encourage the children to take greater care when walking on footpaths; to remember to use the Safe Cross Code and to always wear a seat belt when travelling in a car and to encourage their family members and friends around them to do the same.
COFFEE MORNING
With Winter fast approaching, it's not easy to get out of the house and meet people. We now have a coffee morning every Wednesday from 10am to 12noon, come along to the Resource Centre, chat with your neighbours, and sit and relax in welcoming surroundings. For those who have transport, and have neighbours who would like to attend, why not bring them along with you, all are welcome.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Age Action Ireland are organising free basic computer classes for the over 55's at the Patrickswell Community Resource Centre. The aim of the "Getting Started" programme is to make older people comfortable using computers. Class sizes are small, with one volunteer tutor for every couple of students. Both the volunteers and the older people find the classes rewarding and fun. For volunteers, basic computer skills are needed, but patience and good humour are just as important, training is provided.
If you are interested in becoming a volunteer in Patrickswell, please contact Teresa on 061-320303, or e-mail patrickswellcrc@gmail.com
