GOLF SOCEITY:  Our next outing, which is Benny Nolan’s President’s Prize, will now take place in Adare golf club this Sunday August 21 from 10am to 12noon, and not in Galway Bay golf club as originally planned.

TIDY TOWNS: With the village a mass of colour from end to end, and many comments about how well the village is looking in general, we were horrified and certainly very disappointed to discover that one of the begonia beds at McSweeney’s wall had become the target of mindless vandalism at the weekend. Person or persons unknown had taken a bamboo stick, which was found nearby, beaten all the heads off the blooms, and left them scattered around. Such wanton destruction and sick mentality defies description. Gardai were notified, and are aware of the situation. If anyone notices any suspicious activity in or around the village at any time, please notify Patrickswell or Roxborough garda station. Would all members please note that there will be meeting on Tuesday August 30, in the Cu Chulainn, commencing at 8pm.

LOUGH GUR:  Lough Gur Development has recently taken over the management of the Heritage Centre at Lough Gur. This has been possible with the co-operation and assistance of Limerick County Council, Shannon Development, Shannon Heritage, Ballyhoura Development Ltd, Development Co-Op Staff, and the local community.
To mark this achievement, and to coincide with the start of National Heritage week, Lough Gur Development would like to welcome everyone to an official re launch of the Heritage Centre by the Minister for Arts, Heritage and Gaeltacht Affairs, Jimmy Deenihan on Saturday 20th August 2011 at 6.30pm.

HERITAGE WEEK: Promoted and coordinated by the Heritage Council, National Heritage Week is underway with a host of attractions up and down the country. A bat walk is taking place at Curraghchase this Sunday, commencing from the car park. The event is free, but booking is essential by ringing 01-8602839. Partial wheelchair access is available, and car parking, and children must accompanied by an adult. The Hunt Museum and the Georgian House in Limerick city will be taking part, and for those interested in coastal and maritime matters, the newly restored Loop Head lighthouse in West Clare is hosting an open day. There’s lots of fun in store for you during National Heritage Week. There’s something for everyone and most events are free.

MEASLES IMMUNISATION: The HSE National Immunisation Office is urging parents to make sure that their children are fully vaccinated against measles following a large pan national outbreak of the disease in Europe. Measles is a highly infectious and dangerous illness, which spreads very easily, particularly in homes, crèches, playgroups, camps, schools and universities.  So far, 110 cases of measles have been reported in Ireland since January 2011.  Parents should speak with their GP and get the vaccine for their child if needed. The vaccine is free.

ABINGTON CHURCH: Abington Church, Murroe is open to visitors for the last time this Sunday August 21 from 2 to 4pm. Historical information on display. Refreshments served.  If you are in the Murroe area on Sunday afternoon, do visit this unique, highly decorative and recently restored church.

METEORITE: A piece of Patrickswell’s history was under the spotlight, and the hammer this week, when part of the meteorite which crashed onto land at Scagh, on September 10,1813, was up for auction in Scotland. The item was of great interest as it is quite rare for meteorites to be recovered in Ireland.

FINGERPOST SIGNS: Local businesses wishing to use fingerpost signage to advertise goods and services during these difficult trading times, can now do so with the cost of the licence fee reduced to 50Euro. Local commercial events like wedding fairs and trade shows can also erect temporary signage to advertise.

FARM OPEN DAY: Rigney’s farm at Curraghchase is hosting an open day this Sunday, which will feature their animals, good food and a wealth of all things rural. A master farrier will give a demonstration of his craft, there will be sugan chair and basket making, beekeeping, vegetable growing and soda bread making. A display of reaping, binding, and threshing will happily proceed, alongside a collection of vintage tractors. Lovers of good and real food will be treated to a barbecue of beef, wild boar and sausages. A booklet entitled Slow Food Celebration, will also be on sale to raise funds for Pieta House in Limerick, which offers support to those who are at risk of suicide and self harm.
