There is a change to this year’s local show scene in that Cappamore Show, the fifty seventh, is moving from its traditional Wednesday slot, to Saturday August 20. Famed for being granted fine weather since it was moved to a weekday from a Sunday many years ago, the show promises its usual wealth of displays and competitions, as well as some new attractions, including representatives from the Garda Mounted Division. The following day, Sunday August 21 will see the staging of the twenty sixth annual Harvest Fair in aid of Milford Hospice, which is again being held at the Unigolf Complex in Castletroy. Traditionally, thousands of Limerick people flock to attend this major fund raising event which will feature the usual range of various stalls and attractions including Vintage Car Display, Kiddies Corner, Bottle Stall, Clothes Stall, Bric-a-brac, Flowers and Plants and many others. There will be a great carnival atmosphere with tea stalls, music, barbecue and games, which will all make for a great family day out. Last year, in excess of one hundred and fifty thousand euro was raised. Then on the weekend of August 27-28, Limerick Show, Munster’s largest agricultural show, will take place at Limerick Racecourse, Greenmount, Patrickswell. Many local people will be heading to Cappamore and Limerick either as competitors or exhibitors and will be hoping for success in the various competitions, for their culinary skills, arts and crafts, horticulture and animal classes. Young Vicky Ryan of Patrickswell has already notched up one victory, by being placed first in the Side Saddle Class at the South East Clare Show at Bridgetown last weekend. Well done Vicky. Good luck to all who are entering this year’s competitions. All information regarding Limerick Show is available at www.limerickshow.com
Lets hope that all events will be blessed with fine weather.
WORLD YOUTH DAY:
Next Friday, August 12, is recognised as World Youth Day. It began in the early nineteen eighties with an invitation from John Paul II inviting young people to attend an International Jubilee of Youth in St. Peter’s Square. This event has grown to be the single largest, international gathering of young people the world has ever seen. WYD attracts pilgrims from some 200 nations who gather to celebrate their faith in the Catholic Church. World Youth Day 2011 will be hosted in Madrid, Spain. The theme for WYD 2011 is “Rooted and Built Up in Jesus Christ, Firm in the Faith” (Col 2:7). The 2011 theme celebrates the strength the Church has when its members are firmly connected to Jesus Christ. Another goal of International Youth Day is to unite and celebrate youth worldwide. This year will commemorate the 26th Anniversary of the first International Youth Year in 1985, when the theme was Participation, Development and Peace.
