TIDY TOWNS

Our first meeting this year took place on the last Tuesday in January, with almost a full attendance, except for two members, who were, fortunately for them, enjoying themselves in sunny Portugal. We were joined by Mike Mcsweeney, Chairperson of the Community Council, who informed us of the current proposals and proposed alterations to the Local Area Plan, and the possible implications of those changes. Additions and improvements to our existing planting schemes were also discussed for this year’s entry in the Limerick in Bloom Competition and the County Environment Awards. With last Christmas just a distant memory now, and this year’s probably out of mind for most, John O’Dea, who was responsible for the establishment of Our Lady’s Shrine all of forty five years ago, has come forward with a very generous gesture. He has had a consignment of Christmas cards produced from a recent photograph of the shrine, in all its green and floral splendour, and has donated these cards to the Tidy Towns Group to sell, later in the year of course, with the entire proceeds to be donated to our funds, for the on going upkeep of the village and the shrine.
