REGISTER OF COMMUNITY AND VOLUNTARY GROUPS

Limerick County Council and the Limerick County Development Board are creating a register of all community and voluntary groups operating in County Limerick. All such organisations are being urged to provide contact details for inclusion on this register which will be used as a means of providing information to community and voluntary groups on funding, training opportunities and other supports. Those registered will also be eligible to take part in the election of representatives to Limerick County Community & Voluntary Forum. For more information see http://www.lccvf.ie/ where you can download a registration form.

TIDY TOWNS

For those who were unable to avail of the opportunity to view the Limerick in Bloom trophy last weekend, John McGarry, photographer, has kindly consented to display it in his premises adjacent to the Credit Union. With the help of Mossie Carmody and Paddy Keilly, the Christmas tree and festive lights were erected on Saturday in the grounds of the Garda Station, awaiting the official switch on, and a full report will appear next week.

CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR NOTES

The last appearance of Community Notes for 2008 will be in the edition of the Limerick Leader dated December 18. I would like to thank all the society reps, secretaries and PRO’s who have enabled me to establish a regular and interesting combination of news and information for the community to avail of and enjoy. The first appearance of notes and news for 2009 will need to be with me by Sunday January 11 to be included in the edition dated January 17.

SYMPATHY

The community was saddened to hear of the death of Michael O’Brien, Lurriga, who has passed to his eternal reward, and sympathy is offered to his wife Josie and her extended family. Removal was from Daffy’s, Croom, on Saturday to the Church of the Blessed Virgin, Patrickswell, and Michael was buried in Patrickswell cemetery after 12noon mass on Sunday. Michael was a founding member of Patrickswell GAA, and such was his commitment to the club, that he would regularly bring two horses and a mowing machine to cut the field in order for hurling matches to be played, and then turn out himself to play for the team. He also used to enjoy attending the annual mass and social for senior citizens up until a few years ago, and his favourite party piece was singing “The fair at Cappamore”. May he rest in peace.
